Yeah exactly. Anything longer than that resolves ina waste of money on my phone bill as well. I have a friend I call, who I often go to movies/wrestling events with. I talk to him for an hour a few times, for 45 minutes - he is silent playing on his PS3.

I make up some excuse to hang up the phone after that.

It's an exaggeration first of all, stop taking things literally. Second, I hang up on him or make an excuse to leave him. He is better to talk with not on the phone, than he is.

And second, even if my calls last that long - I just intervene with something he might care about.
