I don't know how expensive the Barton chips are now, but I remember them being a horrible pricing problem back when they were first released...but I would say get anything from a 2400+ up. Like I said before, I'm still running on a 1700+ and am not having problems, but I will be upgrading soon, and you should go ahead and get something good so you wont have to upgrade later...just get the best chip you can find that is 80 bucks under, and you should be good to go, price wise and preformance.

Barton 2500+ is around $75 online.

Note: If your planning on buying any processor from a store, add an extra $200 on the price.

The 64 series is almost pointless at this point. Yeah, they are supposed to have an increase in performance...but it's not worth the extra cash. Just get an Athlon XP for now, you will be fine for quite some time...like I said, get something around the 80 buck margin, and if you feel like you need to upgrade, which hopefully won't happen in the next year or so...unless you are really that greedy, than that will be fine.

Now some kid will come in here telling you that the 64 is the best thing in the world even though there aren't any programs that are 64-bit yet...he just likes to spend money...kids are idiots these days =\

Remember, the most expensive isn't always the best. Hardware is far beyond the reach of software at this point, so getting the older stuff at the cheap prices nowadays is golden.

The extra increase of performance from a A-64 will help a hell alot.

I own a XP 3200+ (highest of it's class) so in my opinion, i think XPs are not that great. Even in older benchmarks where a P4 Northwood 2.8c can beat it. I'm not even going to go in the details on why it's not that great.

Go with the A-64 or P4 "Northwood".

http://www.hardcorecooling.us/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=856
they say it operates at 2.2 ghz, why wouldnt i get a intel that operates a 2.8 ghz? isnt that faster?
http://www.hardcorecooling.us/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=856 and heres the 64 bit processer its only a few more, and since it 64 bit, wouldnt the 32 bit programs run at full speed?

edit
sorry for asking so many questions, but this will be the first cmop that is acutally mine, no 1 else in house will be able to screw this up. and i wanna get somthing that wont be outa date like my vaio lol. even tho i stated the question about intel, i think ill go with amd, tog et a nforce board, but wich do most of u recomend? the 3200 xp/ or the 64bit 3000

P4's pipeline is longer, the reason why it needs to run at a higher speed to match up with a Athlon XP/64.

A Barton 2500+ 1.8ghz would be equivalent to a P4 2.4ghz.

I would recommend a 2500+ becuase it's cheaper. Sure the 3200+ is better, but it's quite not worth the price in my opinion. As for the A-64, the 3500+ is teh way to go.
