I hate putting labels on music. And if I were forced to, not many would fall into those categories.

No, I do not put myself on top, there is no such thing to me as 'the top', everyones' opinion is equally valid. Okay? Are you with me so far? Good.korn said:your playing around your own words to put yourself on top, that i have noticed.
If you place metal as one of your 'subdivisions', then that means metal is a certain kind of rock. Yet you say that metal is not a knd of rock. Rock is very genralized, that's why I only put that one. By the way, you forgot to put GRUNGE in your little category list. Oh, another thing... 'gothic metal'? What makes it 'gothic'? What makes it 'dark'? Not because of the way the band ACTS, I hope? Because the correct term 'gothic' is very different from the definition you seem to be using. It's just like 'pop'; that name was given to that genre because it was popular... but then, pop started to give itself another definition, and now, pop-lovers are saying that everything is pop, because it's popular. And they're wrong. Pop and popular have differences...korn said:rock was developed first and influenced bands like lynard skynard and then gave birth to metal, which was like KISS back then, which gave birth to punk and alternative, like REM and ZZ TOP and others.
rock>metal>punk
BUT that doesn not mean that metal is a type of rock and yes it does depend on your point of veiw. i personally think rock is a genre of its own that consists of:
metal
alternative
slow
classical
nu-metal
mainstream
gothic
punk
wave
i think rock is consisted of all of these ad no one band can exactly be called a rock band, as their music is of rock genre but falls under the subgroup of like mainstream-alternative like linkin park would be classified. a rock and roll band but mainstream-alternative.
korn could have been under rock and would have been considered metal, just metal back then.
cradle of filth would be under rock but would be sub-grouped as gothic metal.
