Why isn't my merc lvling?

try some normal baal runs... they add up the exp quick

Back in the days of 1.09, i had an amazon, which turned out to be my best character ever. Rushed through all acts and she was only lvl 5 at the end, while in nightmare act 2, i bought a might merc at lvl 5, and he maxed out at 98 with my zon being 99. He had cruel colossus spire of hatred (297% +34 max dmg), vampire gaze, and ik ik armor. He did like 500-3000 dmg, and gave my amazon about 1000 dmg.
