Has your laptop come with SP1 or did you have to update to SP1? Is it 64-bit vista or 32-bit vista?

a format is a gaurented way to fix whatever is going on. its a software related issue, not hardware.

what do you do/how long does it last before explorer.exe crashes?

also, if your really refering to explorer.exe, and not iexplorer.exe, ill try to help, but imo the easiest thing to do will be a format

also like someon suggested, check if u have SP1

Start > Right click "Computer" and select Properties. itll tell you if it has SP1 installed or not (IF you can get that far)

also, if you have a OS disk, vista has a repair option that works about 70% of the time from what ive seen, id suggest doing that before you fully format.

The only way Exploer.exe should be crashing is if some program on your tray is causing it TO crash. If it is a specific program, uninstall it.

Download DirectX End User Runtime from the Microsoft Support site. I personally recommended this be your first action before you install any games. This is different from installing DirectX9 or 10, as this is like an update if you will.

If your card isn't Dx10 compatiable, then it will use Dx9 or the highest version it can render on. There shouldnt be a problem with this.

How did you mess up the OS so quickly on a brand new vista machine anyway?
Btw, most new PCs do not come with recovery discs already with the system. Often times you have to order them from the manufacturer or burn them for 2 hours when you first get the system.

Best Solution - Take off Vista and install XP :D

A lot of people think that, but SP1 Vista makes it a lot more efficent. The only dumb thing you can do on Vista is get the 64bit edition. There isn't many drivers for it, and you swell up the memory you use because of the size of an int (The most common datatype any program uses) is doubled in size.

And the more annoying things about it I can contend with.

I'm just going to try and stick w/ XP as long as possible. At least until a new Windows OS comes out. Unless someone has a non-windows OS that they really enjoy? I do want to try something new.

In about 1-2 years, Windows 7 is coming. XP will probably go obselete in 2012 or so.

So it won't be anytime soon.

I made the switch to Vista yesterday. I'm pretty surprised, i kept hearing the worst of the worst when it came to Vista, but i've had zero problems so far, and i didn't even have to run my hotfixes for my motherboard because Vista isn't gay like XP-SP3.

I'm tired of people talking shit about vista when they haven't used it, or were to stupid to figure out how to install and run it properly.

It took me 20 minutes to build my computer for Vista, and I have ran it for over a year now and I have not had it crash once, had no problems with any drivers (im on 64-bit), never slows down, nothing bad has ever happened. Vista is so much better than XP in a million ways.
