Hitler was a brilliant speaker, he was by no means a genius. There was a reason he was never promoted in 4 years of ww1 past corp. He for the most part is why germany lost the war, had he listened to Rommel he would have totally ****ed us in the ass on D-Day, and had he not decided to open another front in Russia (breaking a treaty and in winter no less) he would have won. Hitler made the two of the worst decisons war has ever seen and lost it because of it
Yes, he was both a genius and a complete moron. Although, it is easy to critisize him in our middle class positions in America. ;)

Hitler was not even a good military commander. Sure, he was one of the most influential and greatest leaders this world has ever seen, but his strategic ideas and plans were.. crap. Build an actuall wall spanning the entire coast of Western Europe? Had it not been for Rommel, and perhaps even with, that would have been the greatest waste of time of WWII. It still was stupid, and horribly inadequate.

Hitler should have stayed as the political figurehead and leader, and kept away from important military decisions. Had he, the war may have had a different outcome..

I don't see how anyone can defend what Hitler did, you can't excuse killing millions of your own citizens, or anyone, for any reason. He wasn't a genius at all, in battle strategy or any other point of view. People in Germany saw that democracy wasn't working for them after WW1 and during the depression and they were desperate for a solution to their poverty, he wouldn't have to be a brilliant speaker to rise to power, all he needed was a plan to bring Germany out of depression that the German people would vote for. Military genius? No way, Germany lost the war because they decided to break their pact with Russia and invade while they were still fighting in Britain, I'm sure that wasn't completely Hitler's decision but he most likely had a very large part in it. He killed millions, there is no way anyone can justify that.

Germany lost the war by trying to take over the entire world with only the help of a couple other countries. However, there was a slight chance it could have had a different outcome or, in the very least, ended much more favorably for the Axis had Hitler(and others) not made so many key mistakes(Infantry rush Russia in winter, anyone?).

When I say that Hitler was a great and influential man, I am not exagerating. "Great" does not always mean "good," is just means powerful with a huge impact. If Hitler did not have great influence and have a huge impact on the world, than no one ever has. But I do not defend his actions, not in the least.

Lights, Hitler attacked wanted to attack in early spring, and I think he did attack around them it just took him too long. Hitler was no rommel, Hitler's tactics weren't the best and lots of propaganda was made up to get people against him, that pretty much sums up this thread and I don't believe tispy said it was his. But he should of gave credit and not let us assume.

Early Spring Plan + Slowness = 8+ month delay?
Pretty sad. But there isnt any beating around the bush here. The troops still started moving, and met their destination(before combat), in winter. It was idiocy to pursue the invasion.

Hitler was mobilizing for it's assault against Russia in early Spring, but Moussolini didn't feel he was getting enough of the spotlight, so he launched an invasion against Greece in 1940. This was a horrible failure, and the Greeks were pushing the Italians back practically by themselves, so Hitler had to intervene and save his ally. Unfortunately for Hitler, Moussolini's pride is what delayed the attack on Russia, at a time when Stalin wasn't fully prepared.

Attacking Russia was a terrible idea in the first place, he had a pact with them, and opening another front was not the wisest of things to do.

@Cheese - All true, however that doesnt really change what I was saying. If it was going to be delayed, it should have been continued to be delayed until the winter weather had passed.

Well in any case they invaded in nice summer uniforms. Besides Russia isn't exactly the hottest of climates in summer in the first place.
There were more resons for the loss than the Russian winter though. Germany caused an environment that resulted in a massive exodus of some of their best scientists. This not only left them with a defecit of these scientists, this also resulted in americas chemistry, and physics prorams becomeing much better.
The Germans were also very short on fuel by the end of the war which made their mechanical toys much less useful.

Again, the longer Hitler waited would translate into a better prepared Russia. He just underestimated the Russian winter.
