The Future of Humanity - Will we make it into the next century?

With all of the world's problems stretching from global terrorism to global warming, from all out wars to proxy wars, from the earth reaching its' carrying capacity to whatever else crosses your mind, do you think that we are going to be reaching the 22nd century as a race? Our technology to some is destroying our environment though it is undeniable that technology is increasing the ability of small groups to kill masses, something that is going to get even worse with the technologies that will be invented.

During the last 100 years we have tripled in numbers (from 2 to 6 billion) while steadily destroying the conditions that make Earth livable for humans. Obviously, we are not the smartest of the planet's species, but we are too many and we die hard.

I tend to disagree.
I think our place as the most intelligent of earth's creatures has allowed us to survive for the past several eons.
Let's face it, without those few subtle changes in our brains all those years ago, we probably would have been eaten by saber tooth cats along with all the other apes.

However, I will concede that although we are the most intelligent of earth's species, we are the only species that forces its environment to adapt to it, rather than the reverse case.

such disregard for the balance of ecology on our planet is unfortunate, and probably not possible to stop altogether, lest we return to the trees, but we can certainly mitigate it.

There are too many factors that could take out the human race before the 22nd century. War, Diseases, Meteorites, Starvation, The Rapture -- the list goes on and on. Predicting what will ultimately take the human race out will be the hat trick of the century.

Anyway, I know I won't make it into the next century. Would love if my children could, and I can only hope they will.

Maybe with the economical study that said we will lose in our economies if we don't start working with the environment, egoistical powers like China and the US will work on it. There is still hope.

In the last 100 years we managed to double the average carbon dioxide in the air we breath (a number that was fairly steady during the billions of years of Earth's existence). Given the fact that in the next 20 years the number will be triple the average, even if we stopped using cars and electricity tomorrow, I really don't see why anyone would want to have kids nowdays. What exactly are they going to breath?

Unless something cataclysmic happens, like a big asteroid, we'll be around for a while longer. War, disease, climate change and the rest all suck, and will kill plenty, but I can't see any of those things driving us extinct.

but the part about killing is true. confirming what tronga said and leaving the thread there kind of closes the convo.

well basically environmental terrorism is terrorism that, instead of destorying prized buildings or high population density areas, destroys prized/economically valuable and/or environmentally important sites. e.g destorying the yellowstone park would be environmental terrorism.

the gulf war saw environmental terrorism in its extreme. saddam burned the iraqian oil fields and as a result, the smoke blocked out the sun, poisoned the atmosphere and economically crippled the oil field villages that depended on the oil fields.

i doubt that environmental terrorism is going to affect the earth much...until the terrorists discover that environmental terrorism can be a hundred times more devasating than the typical terrorist action.
