This post is a reply to crooked’s long post several spots above this I am not quoting it to save space

Crooked I believe your triggers with the switches is a lot of unnecessary work and you will find several bugs In what you have done

1. I’m not sure of the circumstances but since switches are not defined to a single player and since player 1 will set a switch once he picks a unit then all the remaining triggers with switch 1 as there conditions in them will happen right then.

2. Avoid using the waits "1,800,000mil" they are completely pointless and you will see they cause more problems than fix. When you wait for that long, then remaining triggers with waits in them will not be carried out until the wait is finished. (Some people refer to this as the waits "adding together" this is actually a misinterpretation)

3. You said that switch 3 prevents the defeat or victory trigger from happening too soon. Maybe this was a error on your part but its completely false since the condition requires it to be set and you set that switch on one of your earlier triggers. It would be much easier to use a condition that refers to the count down timer instead of the switches and long waits "count down time is at most 0 seconds".

4. I don't think any of your triggers needed switches at all since most of the switches are just used to directly activate another trigger without any other conditions. these extra actions could just be tacked on the original trigger.
-Doing a trigger like that is useful for two reasons 1. to change the player activating the trigger (so a trigger owned by a computer can make sounds or display text for human players or some other actions where current player is necessary). 2. To be a quick reference to a action that is activated by many different situations.

This is not part of the previous post because it has nothing to do with it

I would like to take a shot at explaining switches hopefully it will help if the other post did not.

==========SWITCH BACICS===============
-All switches have two states SET and CLEAR and all of them are either set or clear at all times in the game.
-All switches start the game as clear
-Switches are not unique to individual players so many times it is necessary to have a switch for each player
-Switches can have 4 things done to them in the action part of the window 1.SET 2.CLEAR 3.TOGGLE 4.RANDOMIZE
chances are you will just be using 1 and 2 for now
-When a switch is in the conditions of a trigger it is checking to see if the switch is on or off. If the conditions are "switch 1 is set" and the switch is clear the trigger will not fire.
-When a switch is in the actions of a trigger you are modifiying the switches state (set or clear)
====================================

You may already know all this or not and your saying "I know, WHAT ARE THEY FOR" ill try my best to answer this now

Switches basically used to relate triggers to each other. Many situations are impossible to determine using standard conditions.
-Like if a player has been to a location in the PAST
-Switches can be used to recognize if a trigger has already been carried out.
-There commonly used If your creating a bound and you need a way to stop and start new levels

==========EXAMPLE Door Locked==============
1. You might be creating a rpg and you stumble on a door you and you want this door to be "LOCKED"
you can use a switch to represent when this door is unlocked or locked. In a independent trigger you will set the switch to represent unlocking the door of finding the key" The triggers would look like this
=Trigger 1.=
Conditions:
-[Current player] brings at [least] [one] [men] to location [key]
Actions:
-[Set] [switch 1] <-- probably will rename the switch to Key1
-Display text [you have found a key in the bushes] <- just decoration nice to have
=Trigger 2=
Conditions-
-[Switch 1] is [set]
-[Current player] brings [at least] [1] [men] to location [door]
Actions-
-[Disable] doodad state for [upper right door] at location [door] for [all players] <-- this condition opens the doodad door
-Display text [you have unlocked the door] <--again this is decoration

These are basically the trigger for you locked door if a player walks up to it before they get the key the door will not open but if they got the key ealyer then the door will open

Here is a 3rd trigger i like to though in for effect
=Trigger 3=
Conditions:
-[Switch 1] is [Clear]
-[Current player] brings [at least] [1] [men] to location [Door]
Actions:
-Display text [This door is locked you must find the key to enter]
-wait 4000 <-- this is so your message isn't spammed
==========EXAMPLE Power generator==============
Say your creating a game with a power generator I¡¦m not sure what you may use this for but it¡¦s the principle that counts.

I¡¦m going to set it up so when you walk to the generator it will turn on and remain on for 1 minute before powering off.

=Trigger 1 turn on generator=
-[Current player brings at least one men to power generator]
-[switch generator] is [clear] „² this is so the trigger does not happen when the generator is on
Actions:
-[set] [switch generator]
-[set] countdown timer to [60] seconds „² not a switch
-display text ¡V[generator powered up]
-play wav [some generator sound] „²these two actions are for cool effects
-preserve trigger
=Trigger 2 power down generator=
Conditions:
-[switch generator] is [set] „² once again this it to prevent the trigger from happening when the generator is off
-count down timer is [at most] [0] seconds
Actions:
-[Clear] [switch generator]
-Display text [the generator has shut down]
-preserve trigger

This is the basics for your generator but right now it does nothing but cool text messages you can add now have triggers that require the generator to be on in order to carry out

=Trigger 3 something that needs power generator on=
Actions:
-[switch generator] is [set]
-[Current player] brings [at least] [one] [men] to [heal machine]
Conditions:
-set hit points for [all] [men] for [current player] at [heal machine] to 100%
-display text [you have been healed]
-preserver trigger

I decided to make the generator power a "healing machine" you can add many other things for the generator to power as well. You may also want a trigger to tell the player that the healing machine has no power when the generator is off. For this you would use the switch to be clear.

thats fine with me :) Some times it is neccary to write more, most people who are asking what switches are need more than a short definition and even once they read a long one like mine they may still have questions.
I know this because i have tought many people about switches most of them it takes about a hour. Other people can pick it up quick and not need to be told. I did this and im assuming crooked foot did not judgeing by a pervious post. (nothing againsed crooked your a great guy)

Or we can just link up to it.

You can edit your Duh thread. I had my of my threads stickied and I can't edit it. ah Maybe you have special permission. Anyways I found the color list on page 5 or 6 of the Starcraft UMS forum.

I only add questions that are actually important, answering every question in that thread, and soon we will have to add a "Conents" thread so ppl can find stuff.

"frequently asked questions also known as the Duh! thread."

A lot of people do ask " where can I get a really good editor "
"what program changes color and where can i get it"
etc.
