Invisible? I haven't seen any...

Anyway, My stupid Shade cost me a battle once. I was spying on some Orcs and theey skirmished, so I defended. I missed selecting my hero, selected my Shade and sent it to follow the BM. Then it Bladestormed before I could do Sleep. Stupid Shade - it died in the Bladestorm.

Shades are inevitable when you play with the 'good' guys.

Not for preventing expansions but to attack the enemy just when they are creeping a high lv creep like a golem or something, anything.

If you don't do those kind of moves you're likely to lose especially against human since they creep around so fast from the start. Killing an Archamge creeping is a typical must move for the Undead in maps like the Lost Temple(Undead sux in this map).

In fact many 'good' guys even buy gems to kill shades.

Shades are good against any race. NE to see if their troop is only hunt, only dryad, or to see if they're preparing Chim. If only hunt you get ghouls and necs. Only dryad no temples, Chims a lot of gargs, If you aren't prepared especially for a surprise chimaera you're dead again with the UD.

Shades are good with Orcs too. You need to know if they're going wyverns or just spirit lodge. Some orc users even build the beastiery in hidden places but shades following BM or the orc's troops can easily spot the adding wyverns.

Shades are good. I mean there isn't any 'useless unit'. Blizzard wouldn't have took the time to make it anyway.

Shades are only good, if they aren't detected, I play elf, when I see that I'm playing undead... I get huntress' and I hang sentinals (owls) in the trees in my base just to detect stupid units such as shades that you speak of....
