Here is a new twist on a old scam. At least to me.

My friends son was using one of his dads characters to play around with on USEast Ladder Softcore, and came across a game called HideNSeek. He was told that their was a perfect Maras somewhere in the game, and if he could find it it was his.

Thinking he would do his dad a favor, he went to find the amulet. Sure enough he was the one out of 4 other to find the item. When he picked it up, he said the mouse got "all buggy" and all his gear dropped then he locked up.

The scammer hit pay dirt on this character. Lvl 93 Hammerdin with: Enigma, Perfect Hoto, Shako (Umed), Arachnids, Hoz (Umed), Perfect CtA, Etheral Treks, Magefist, Spirit Monarch, 2x SoJ, Maras, 9x Pally Combat Charms, Pally Torch, and some MF sc's. All of it gone.

To me this sounds alot like the old check this website out, then drop your gear scam. Is this new, or has someone else run across this?

In either case, careful of the game name HideNSeek.

If it was the son, he probably lied and said the mara made him drop the items. He fell for the scam u mentioned, and lied to make his dad less mad. Atleast, that's what it sounds like.

Nah, he's 13. Not a normal player, due to all the demon stuff, but when his mom isn't home Mike lets his son play for a bit. He told me what happened shortly afterwards, since I was online at the time. I did see a game with that name, but, when I went in everyone was leaving. He described it in detail, and it sounds alot like the scam with the website.

If you don't know their is a scam where they say go to a website to learn how to dupe, or to join a clan and get something free for sighning up or whatever. You are asked not to leave the game, and go to this sight, when you come back, your mouse freaks out, and all your gear drops on the ground and you can't grab anything, chat, leave .... all completely locked up.
Then the scammer graps your gear and leaves.

Only difference with this was, it happened when he picked up the item and put it into his inventory. All his gear he is wearing, and inventory droped on the ground.

He is a good kid, and thought he was helping his dad out. He was scared and told me what happened. He didn't know what to do, and I said to tell the truth, and I will back you up. He knows if he lied to Mike he would be in bigger trouble if he found out he was lying. So I told him to come over (he lives on the same block) and I will call Mike and tell him to call me when he wakes up from his nap.

Mike called sometime later, and I told him what happened, obviously he was upset a bit, but, said it was not a "huge issue" since it was only a game.

maybe im wrong, but wouldn't that be impossible?

i know the website scam, because well its an exe file. very simple?

but through a game item? picking up an item cant control what your computer does unless blizzard has new items like that in the newest update?

Thats why I made the thread this is completely new to me. I never heard of this with items before this. Was wondering if anyone had seen this game, or heard of this scam before.

This definately sounds impossible. It HAS to be clientside. I suppose technically he could have been trojaned previously, but the chances of him then joining the correct game are astronomical.

its not possible. if that WERE possible, wed have ith and bugged items running around again [becasue to do this, woudl require hacknig an item]

what REALLY happened, is the kid managed to fall for the old "download this "dupe" and drop your gear" and is scared his dad will kill him for it.

All I know is what I was told. I have no clue what goes into hacking so I can say if this is or is not possible. I'm just repeating what was told to me.
He does know about the website scam, so I highly doubt he fell for that. Their is no way he could have put all the gear AND inventory in a trade screen and press the ok button.
I don't know any other way that he could have lost everything at the same time, without the web scam.
Also, what is the point lying about one scam when you admitt you fell for another one? I don't know, 100%, but I believe what he says on this.
This could have been a test for a new hack. It is possible, that he was the lucky guinne pig for it. Hell USEast was off line from 1:20am Saturday Night till at least Noon Easter. (Not sure if it's back up got tired of checking.) Maybe their was a huge hack that got caught.

In any case, just be aware of this, so it doesn't happen to anyone else.

The website drop hack were refering to is the one which forces you to drop all your items onto the ground and disconnect from the game, not tradehack...

oooohh, i remember this now.

Way back in .02 i think, there used to be a hack where you could give someone a bugged item, and it would actually have control from their side, and literally hack your computer from your d2 game, so best option, pick it up, and IMMEDIATELY LEAVE! ALT +F4!

I'm guessing the dangerously modified it to work for 1.1
