How does honoring a president death make me an extreme patriot? I am sure if I was around when JFK, Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, FDR, died I would do the same thing I am now (if computers were around).

So, he was a military sir. In the times of the Cold War, one could understand, but it led to a large deficit. How smart is that?

Well, I don't know much about him, either because I'm not American, and because I was too young when he was president.
When you had an empire building weapon too, it is the smart thing is to make more of them and faster. Thus called the arms race.

He was a strong president. Wasn't fearful of the USSR and he stood up to Gorbachev. He didn't do that much to bring down the USSR though. The Soviet Union's economt was collapsing, Gorbachev allowed countries of the Warsaw pact to break from Communism and become Democratic with no retaliation from the USSR.

Good not legendary.

What people don't realize is without the arms race communism would have died faster. So when reagen decided to keep going with it he just let the USSR last longer.

By what? A couple of years? If Reagan had decided to not, the soviets could have attacked the US and the USA without a stronger military wouldn't be as strong as it should.

An empire building weapons? Where? Pick your words better next time, please. USA should be called more of an Empire than URSS. It was a dictactorship, different things.

Tronga, the USSR controlled a lot of land. It took over a lot of land as well. Hence the word empire. The US is not an empire. The US has not took much land since the Manifest Destiny days.

What is your question? Would I do the same for a bad president? Most likely no. Unless that person did something that deserved it. Richard Nixon is example. He wasn't much of a bad president, but the watergate scandal overshadowed whatever good he did.

66 (Unflattering) Things About Ronald Reagan
Filed under: News — David Corn on 6/6/2004 at 6:23 am

Six years ago, when Republicans in Congress were in the process of renaming Washington National Airport after Ronald Reagan, I [David Corn] wrote the short piece below. It proved to be one of the more popular articles to appear in The Nation, and Harper’s republished it. The piece remains relevant today–particularly as a cheat sheet for those who dare to point out the Reagan presidency was not all that glorious and was more nightmare in America than morning in America.

66 Things to Think About When Flying Into Reagan National Airport

The firing of the air traffic controllers, winnable nuclear war, recallable nuclear missiles, trees that cause pollution, Elliott Abrams lying to Congress, ketchup as a vegetable, colluding with Guatemalan thugs, pardons for F.B.I. lawbreakers, voodoo economics, budget deficits, toasts to Ferdinand Marcos, public housing cutbacks, redbaiting the nuclear freeze movement, James Watt.

Getting cozy with Argentine fascist generals, tax credits for segregated schools, disinformation campaigns, “homeless by choice,†Manuel Noriega, falling wages, the HUD scandal, air raids on Libya, “constructive engagement†with apartheid South Africa, United States Information Agency blacklists of liberal speakers, attacks on OSHA and workplace safety, the invasion of Grenada, assassination manuals, Nancy’s astrologer.

Drug tests, lie detector tests, Fawn Hall, female appointees (8 percent), mining harbors, the S&L scandal, 239 dead U.S. troops in Beirut, Al Haig “in control,†silence on AIDS, food-stamp reductions, Debategate, White House shredding, Jonas Savimbi, tax cuts for the rich, “mistakes were made.â€

Michael Deaver’s conviction for influence peddling, Lyn Nofziger’s conviction for influence peddling, Caspar Weinberger’s five-count indictment, Ed Meese ("You don’t have many suspects who are innocent of a crime"), Donald Regan (women don’t “understand throw-weights"), education cuts, massacres in El Salvador.

“The bombing begins in five minutes,†$640 Pentagon toilet seats, African- American judicial appointees (1.9 percent), Reader’s Digest, C.I.A.-sponsored car-bombing in Lebanon (more than eighty civilians killed), 200 officials accused of wrongdoing, William Casey, Iran/contra.

“Facts are stupid things,†three-by-five cards, the MX missile, Bitburg, S.D.I., Robert Bork, naps, Teflon.

Is it USSR in english? I never know :(

Anyway, an empire is something you forge with basicly military power. With that point of view, we can say that it is partially an empire, but not all.

Besides, it's the US that want to plant troops all over the world nowadays, innit?

em·pire
n.

A political unit having an extensive territory or comprising a number of territories or nations and ruled by a single supreme authority.

The USSR walked across countries and claimed them as their own. They did so with their military. You don't think automatically just submitted to the Soviets do you?

Putting troops a lot of places does NOT equal an empire. If those troops were securing the land for America and the American government ran that land, then yes that would be an empire. However it is not like that. Take Iraq for example. Our troops are there to keep the peace and help train an Iraq force to keep Iraq secure.
