Should americans have the right to report what they call suspicious activity on airplanes, when those "suspicious activities" involve different cultural practices?

Or, should muslims insist on being able to pray at airports and in airplanes, when exibiting their cultural distinctiveness can cause americans to be affraid?

Note here that while praying 5 times a day is a duty, praying at a specific time is only a suggestion. The prayer can *always* be pushed later if there's a good reason.

shouldn't this be in AS? none the less...myself i dont think the prayer at a specific is that big of a deal, but its not my culture, and i dont hold their customs....but if this was the first time people have been withheld from doing something they see as customary, i could see the problem...but it isn't so i dont.

I don't think people should be going "OMG he's got a bomb!" if someone is praying or something, but my idea on racial profiling is "If the shoe fits"

So, what you two are saying is, somebody's cultural practice is less important than the fear of your average "John Doe"? Is it even legitimate to be afraid of muslims "acting muslim" in an airplane?

Or, was it irresponsible of the imams to do so, knowing the circonstances?

shouldn't this be in AS? .
I want everyone's inputs. And I think we dont have to spam and flame in a thread like that.

Well I'm not saying people should automatically flip out if they see a Muslim, but I am pointing out that a disproportionate amount of recent error attacks have been done by Muslims. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not saying we should go on some kind of Muslim witch hunt or something.

Yeah, I knew that. =0

So then, the whole question is, how do you conciliate a muslims's right to pray without getting trown out of a flight, with an american's right to report what he believe to be suspicious activity?

Well the ideal would be to educate Americans so they know about other cultures. I'm pretty sure it's a small minority that this kind of crap happens with. Most people know what a Muslim praying looks like, but some obviously don't.

Well I don't think you should be able to sue someone for reporting you unless you can prove that they did so because of race/ethnicity. That's just insane. People will be afraid to report anything then, and some terrorist will get through because the public was to afraid for their own asses. The lawsuit against the "John Doe" should be dropped, but I think the person reported should get some compensation from the airline because they would have undoubtedly missed their flight, etc.

Americans should be able to report suspicious activity in any situation. The last thing we need to do is scare people away from reporting suspicious activity even if it turns out to be something innocent.

As for airplanes in particular, I think the airline should be able to kick off anyone they wish to (as long as they put it in the contract when buying a ticket, give a reimbursement, or something along those lines) because I believe in private property rights very strongly (though federal law seems to disagree with me). Most major airports around here, however, are publicly owned, so that would need to be dealt with differently.

I'm completely against racial profiling; I'm completely for reporting any individual whose activities seem suspicious regardless of race or religion.

It's impossible to stop racial profiling, because there is always going to be some sort of insecurity with different people. I find it wrong to withhold their religious activities, because the only reason they do it is because it makes other people uncomfortable with it, not because they have a "bomb", but because it's different. Racism, of course, is in play...

Would just like to point out how ironic this is.
Thats Irony alright.

I'm no Muslim hater but there are some very scary looking Muslims out there along with some very worried people. Can you really blame them with all the attention on Muslims these days to racially profile someone?
