I prefer linux because of it's speed and performance. I never have to reboot after installing something. It never crashes, and there is a linux program for every windows program I used (IE Aim, MSN, Yahoo, ICQ). It's also pretty damn secure, and windows viruses won't effect it. One of my main reasons for switching to linux was because I was just sick of windows. Every time I would reinstall windows, and connect to the internet, I would immediatly get that stupid MSBLAST worm...which is in fault of microsoft. I now run linux without any annoying problems like that. I also like that fact that you can totally customize linux to how I want it. You can basically have your computer do what YOU want it to.

Yes, one of the downsides is compatibility with windows programs, but WineX runs every windows program I must use (like diablo). Diablo runs flawlessly on linux for me.

I also like the KDE (Graphical Desktop) GUI better than windows, to be honest. Just looks better, in my opinion. I tried linux to learn something, and now I'm hooked...I haven't needed to boot into windows for a long time.

I'm not saying Windows sucks, it doesn't...it's a great OS...I just prefer linux.

MACs are much MUCH better then everyone makes them out to be. I use a G4 PowerMac. Everyting runs super smoothly, its more secure then any other OS and IT DOSENT GET ANY VIRUSES, PERIOD. Sure, it may not be able to run alot of games (CS grrr...), but its enough for me, Diablo, SC, WC are all mac compatible. Has anone here seen the graphics of the Mac OSX OS? Everything (almost) is nice looking 3D models, the windows even have a cool animation when u minimize em, plus you can see a mini version of them on the bottom so you know what state/screen it was on when u minimized it. I can't stand the graphics of my friends windows when i go to his house.

I don't understand why this thread was moved...

Anyways I have used linux, but as I program in vb and hate gimp I tend to shy away from linux unless I have a virus or something and need to use it.

Well, the comp i am using now (2 comps in house) sucks really bad.. like MV said, i play SC for about 5 mins and i crashes due to temperature risings.. grr..

But my comp inside runs fine, havent had an overheating prob with it yet. Planning on making a new comp in place of the first one i said.

im going to question this again. why do people think windows is an unstable OS compared to linux? the oh so stable linux. is windows considered unstable because it crashes? because i already ruled out that it most likely crashes when you do something stupid on it, or you push your PC to the limit. my computer never crashes, and its a windows OS. is windows still "unstable" in my case? if so what can linux do for me to make it more "stable"?

Windows is stable as an operating system...to an extent...but it has tons of security flaws, and bugs. The MSBLAST worm, and how it can transfer itself onto your pc through an open internet connection is a perfect example of one of their big flaws. It's basically an exploit in the OS, that someone found and took advantange of.

I wouldn't go as far to say windows isn't stable, because it is...it is just far less secure than linux.

I've been using linux now for about 3 months straight, which is a long time for me, and I've never experienced any major problems, viruses, or anything like that. From the time I installed it, to now, it hasn't slowed down a bit. Whenever I work on windows, and get everything I want downloaded and installed, after time my computer seems to get slower and slower each day. Not to mention I start getting a million illegal operations and windows errors. This doesn't happen on linux.

The great thing about linux is, once you install it, there really is no need to ever re-install it to fix things, unless you totally **** up your system ;). When I was a windows-only user, I had to reinstall it all of the time for unknown reasons, and slowing performance. Like I said, the two major great things about linux are security and performance.

this is the case for very few microsoft users that i know of. its all a matter of the user. or so im convinced, as to getting MSBLAST worms and other problems with the security.

besides, cant security flaws be made up for with zone alarm and various other programs (spybot S&D, etc.)?

Zone Alarm just protects you from getting it, by filtering net access. The exploit is still there. Although, Microsoft released a patch to download to fix it, which usually downloads automatically if you have the updating tool enabled. The reason you don't get it, is because you have your system up to date with all the millions of patches they release to try to fix all of their bugs in windows. When you newly install Windows, you have no patches installed, so you can get that stupid thing by just being online. Like I said, whenever I re-install windows, and connect to the net, I always get it. So then, after reinstalling Windows to fix all of my problems, I right after have to fix yet another problem. It's SO annoying...so I decided not to bother, and try something new.

Spybot can only fix certain DSO exploits. To fix these flaws you need Windows Update..... If you trust it.

Or you could wait for the next Service Pack and download it.

(If you're wondering, the next Service Pack for XP is 72MB (Home) and 90MB (Pro))

My computer's always had heating problems. I remember how much I enjoyed the smooth, seamless gameplay I could experience with the power of my new Geforce 4 Ti4200 a year or two back. Of course, I didn't know that the combination of a VIA motherboard and an HP Pavilion computer case meant that I would have serious heating issues with a Geforce card like that. The computer froze up while I was playing Starcraft. The screen became garbled and sounds were repeating very loudly. It happened very suddenly. I shut off my computer just before the putrid smell of molten plastic began to fill my room and before long my entire house. It turned out a little black thing on the graphics card melted and had, in turn, destroyed all the data on my hard drive.

I just got a new card, a Geforce FX 5900 XT. It runs about as hot as the Ti4200 did. My computer locks up every now and then when I play highly CPU-dependant games, but now I just open up the case and let it cool off so that I don't have the same problem again.
