More than 512 mb ram...worth it?

well i have to admit, if i want to run knoppix (3.3 std linux)
it takes up about 80mb of my ram so i might have to get 512, even tho i might actually get a different linux eg slackware

Last I heard, my dads machine runs with 2g of ram. Granted he uses AutoCAD for his job, and regurly has about 2-10 drawings up at a time (ranging from under a meg, to over a gig)

He said that "without it, it just cant handle all the "****ing bullshit retard drawings that those ****nuts over at *XCOMPANY HERE* make""

A gig of ram is usefull to take the edge off considering windows xp uses 150 mb+ ram alone. More ram is especially useful if you plan to play MMOG's and other next-gen games.

512MB PC3200+ is good enough, that is mostly all you need.
