I'm going to build my own computer fairly soon, and I'm not quite sure about how much ram to buy. Is it really worth upgrading to 1 or more gigs of ram? If someone could provide some technical proof of about how much different types of programs take up, thatd be great.

I have 768mb of DDR333. I upgraded just a few weeks back from 256 and I must say, this is MUCH better. If you are a heavy multitasker like me and run MANY programs at once...then yes, it's recommended to get at least 512mb.

One stick of good 512 PC3200+ that can handle nice timeings would be ideal. I think 1gig is a bit overkill for now; especially me since I'm a heavy tweaker, but you can always upgrade later :p.

1GB is for serious CAD/CAM users, professional Max/Photoshop users and people who want to compile 100 Java/C++ etc scripts at once.

Sure, it's fun, but not worth it.

My friend has 768MB of DDR-266 SDRAM and it doesn't do great, it does better than expected.

It really depends on the rest of your system.

If you've overclocked your processer to 3.8, have a brand new top of the line graphics card (GeForce FX or the like), and like to run all the newest games at the max graphics settings with full anti-aliasing... yeah, upgrading your ram to 1 gig will help a ton. But if your like most of us and have a midrange machine, you'll get more preformance spending that money on something like a new graphics card then you will upgrading your ram. More than 512 isnt nessesary unless you want to play the top games at great graphics settings (or you have a job that requires you to have craploads of apps opened at once), but you won't be able to run them that high anyway unless the rest of your rig is top of the line.

I would still say that 512 would be enough for you really. Just telling you though, if you were to use that page filing trick I posted in here a few months ago on 512mb of ram...better hope you have a big hard drive :D I have 768mb of rame and it takes a little over 2gb of space.

For the newer games, you will need a hell lot of it.
My current comp specs:

Athlon XP 3200+ 2.2ghz
9800 Pro 128mb of 256-bit memory
512mb of PC2700

And i still experience lag in Farcry (very high settings). I know i need to upgrade to PC3200 but i'll need to save some money for it.
