If the two were to have ever fought who do you think would win? Keep in mind I am only referring to a single army vs. another army with no reinforcements of an equal size.

Samurais were trained to kill, and they were real fierce soldiers. A Medieval European infantry soldier, even if fully armored, would probably take a lot of punch. However, the power of a good Heavy Cavalry, the jewel of Medieval European warfare, would own foot soldiers anytime, I'm afraid.

Japan also had very good cavalry, and cavalry charging a line of long spears is a bad thing, for the cavalry at least.

Suprisingly samurai were usually not the deciding factor in a battle, many times it was the ashigaru who determined who won and who lost.

The japanese also made the, not one of but, the best sword.

The Ashigaru were samurais, but of a lower rank. So, I was counting them all in.

--Edit--

About the sword, I assume you are talking about the Katana, light, strong and sharp. All you need in a sword ;)

only because there were more ashigaru they were often the deciding factor. samauri were better trained and better equipped.

if your talking about an even number of soldiers you definately want samauri.

id have to say the japs would win... coz theyd rather die than lose.

The Kamikaze were the pilots that threw themselves after the Allied ships in WWII... Or it was also a thypoon, that defeated the Mongolian fleet and saved Japan from a certain overwhelming invasion...

But, unless I'm mistaken, there were no Infested Terrans throwing themselves at the enemy...

hmm, we are all forgetting one major factor...the longbowmen. England fought a full unit of french knights(calvary and infantry) and the longbowmen literally tore their ranks apart...then when the knights got in close, the bowman attacked with knives...

but, i think it would come down to strategy in an even numbered of army battle. Remember when hannibal attacked a city outside rome and the romans sent 70k troops to the carthage(and allies) 50k? well, if a good stratigest was on the field, it would be a tough battle.

i think that it is a near impossible scenario though. Because if it was midiveal japn vs midiveal europe, the numbers would DEFINITLY be in eruopes side and there is the chruch, if they called japan a great scourge, the europeans would rally vs japan.

Ashigaru were conscripted peasants, some became samurai however.

The size of the armies are the same and neither can be reinforced...

I'd count the Katana as "one of the best swords", because the Islamic world had Damascus Steel, which produced swords of amazing quality.

Ashigaru said that the Japanese have the best sword in the whole world. bushido counter-argumented with the fact that the muslims have the Damascus Steel, apparently some sort of steel that excels in making swords :wavey

And the English Longbowmen defeated the French Knights in France, when they were in the top of a hill, and thus they either had more range, the arrows would get there faster (gravity), and the French horses would get more tired and get there slower.

In a plain territory, the longbowmen would be completly decimated by the Knights.

Was the new model army in the medevil times, or was it just out? @the bastard sword Someone else said that the katana was THE BEST sword. But obviously the person who mentioned the muslim sword thought it was better and the katana would be ranked one of the best but not the best. Should we really name particular armies?

The fact that a katana was made of folded steel is what made them so strong, but the design is what made it so deadly, that curve made it a very good slashing weapon.

The japanese also devoloped armor that was meant to help protect them from arrows, but I think an arrow shot from a longbow can easily go through plate mail, so the paper in the armor wouldn't help much.
