Main RPG characters are all the same...

Note; I'm only using FFX, FFVII, FFVIII, SO2 and SO3 for clarity purposes. I could go into games like LoD (not D2) or Tales of Symphonia, Fire emblem, Legend Of Legia...But yeah, I'll spare you

They're all young kids. Hardly ever older than the age of 20. They always (ok, so theres a few cases where they dont) use swords. They always get bitched around by one of the first characters you meet in the game (Auron/Wakka/Barret/Quistis/Cliff to name a few (From FFX, FFVII, FFVIII and SO3). Theres always someone thats more of a badass than them (Auron/Khimari from FFX, Vincent/Barret/Red XIII/Cid from FFVII, Zell/Seifer from FFVIII, Dias from SO2, Abel from SO3) They whine, alot. And it always seems like they have something wrong with them, or they did something bad or they traveled through time..

Why the hell is it always like this? Is it too much to ask for some badass main character? Someone that uses a different weapon, other than a sword, thats somewhere around 35, who doesn't take shit from anyone...Why can't there be a game where the main character smacks around one of the other characters in the game like they always seem to get smacked around...

Ugh, Sorry. It's just been bugging me for a while, and having another game where some lameass whiny punk with a sword doesn't make it any better.

Heh. That's why I like the other characters, and not the main ones. Chrono Trigger for example, did I go nuts over Crono? No. I found Magus, he uses scythes, has dark elemental powers, and frankly, that means screw Crono for me. I always loved Magus more, and always will. If I ever did play FFVII, I'd most likely use Vincent over Cloud too, as for FFVIII, I don't know. I don't like how they are all the same either. They usually use a sword, and are quiet throughout the story (Cloud not included, he's a talker) but yea, I can agree with you Mike on how they are the same. >.<

You are so right. But Magus has NO daul-techs and his triples are mostly learned off stones. Yeah, the main character always has a problem with the first person they meet. Either they join your party and become less of a pain they were (Auron), die (Seifer), or just tell you to get the hell out of thier country or house (Baku).

Cobalt Wolf is actually a roleplaying char that I made up.
She's a drow (dark elf) ranger that uses a bow and lives
in the woods that she protects and watches over.
She helps people in need but only for her own
best interest and doesn't tolerate stupid bullshit.
People seek her out in her woods for help if they are really desperate,
otherwise she stays to herself along with the creatures of the woods.​

I think Xenogears might be an exception to some of those rules... Fei isn't whiny, he's over 20 (21 or 23 I think), he fights with only his fists, and although there are cooler characters in the game (Bart), he's not bad himself.

It still doesn't change the fact that FFVIII is sitll the best RPG I've ever played.

Now that you say this, there really aren't alot of RPG's that don't have less than 3 of these traits. Odd...

Yeah well, I think that Cloud is cool because of his freaking huge sword, but Vincent is so much cooler, I use all of my characters for some reason in that game, kind of weird, but I'm a weird person so that doesn't matter, but anyways back on topic, I never did really like Barret, he just wasn't that big of a badass, and I hate his stupid little machine gun, I hate Yuffie more because you know...*Spoilers*Most of you have played it so you already know this, but when she steals your materia, I got so pissed at her, she's my most hated character, but I wish there would be another guy thats a sweet main character.

That's awesome! Wow, that blew me away, I'd definately use that character. Reminds me a lot of me in real life, except I'm just a human. But I love to help people, anyway I can. I don't like idiots, here, or in RL. I will deal with some people though, but yeah. People always beg for my D2 Items on West, and i always like to give people what they want, if I can. Awesome character you have there, Cobalt Wolf.

But Magus's magic owns most duel techs, and Darkmatter does more then Luminare and Shock could ever do. The stone triple techs can do a lot as well.

all my main chars (on neverwinter nights too) use either spears or scythes, have a dark history like an ex-assasin, drug dealer, etc. and they fall in love with the black mage, not the prissy white mage/princess/queen.

the game is so COOL. if your an rpg gamer, then you should definitly pick this game up, its awesome. it has the BEST videogame villians hands down. Sephiroth is pint sized compared to the villians in this game. I put this game as the top rpg in my list. This game is overall among the best i have ever played...




let me warn you, the rest of my post will contain SPOILERS





Ok, Fei is the main character of xenogears and appears at first to be...a wuss. But he suffers from multiple personality disorder. Freud has a theory that there are 3 diffrent egos. There is your normal ego, then the super ego, and then your ID(from what i am told, the ID of a person is their very basic being. these are the persons survival skills and caveman instincts, he tends to be very aggressive and well, dangerous). In the game, Fei would turn ID and well....be badass, infact, in one of the cutscenes, he tears apart a whole city without any remorse. thats pretty badass....but fei himself isnt evil or badass completly. But still, turning into a badass that pretty much can tear apart a gundamlike robots like a hot knife through butter...its cool. oh, he doesnt use his sword either, infact, only one character in your party uses swords and he doenst use them until much later in the game.

Well...Suikoden fits that almost perfectly, except the main character never uses a sword. I think they have them be young is because it shows they have more left in life, like they have just begun their life's quest kinda thing. But hey, use rpg maker and make your own game.

yes it did, but xenogears was and is the best rpg out there...they should have used a similar gameplay style as xenogears, the combo system, ether system ,etc...but then again the ether system comes from the zohar, is that in xenosaga? i never got that far in that game...

you live in the woods? You use a bow? is your compooper made of wood. if so what about termites?
