The cops get called and given a tip on a house for being a drug dealer and having stolen merchandise in said house.

The cops get there to a proper and polite gentlemen. They conversate and exchange compliments both ways. The cop will no doubt wish to search the house. Said gentlemen would not want to be a bad host so he invites the officer in to peruse the premise and in doing so finds neither drug nor stolen "peices"

can the "tipping" party then get arrested?

I don't think a false tip merits an arrest.

It depends on the tippers motives. I honestly have no idea how the police can decipher that, but let's say the tipper was just some kids ****ing around. If they were found out, yeah they'd be in trouble. If the tipper genuinely thought it was a drug dealer...

But yeah no clue how the police pick apart that one.

well its not exactly false. But I am sure if the Tipper wantted it bad enough they can embellish just so the cops would actually give it a look around.

It would be less nerve racking if said person, not the tipper, wasn't in an area where drugs flow like the Nile during rain season.

I am led to believe that the "tipper" is in a delusional state of depression looking for any type of get-back-at-you retaliation after their lives kinda got flipped around, on a minute scale of course but still flipped.

But there is a particular quote that comes to mind.... "Paranoia is reality on a finer scale."

Oh never thought of that. If you know who the snitch is you need to lay down you own law and tell them to stop being nosy ****s.
If somehow I ended up in your position that snitch would be out a car window or missing some tires.

Well the cat has yet to be released from its bag. But the proper precautions have been taken by said party that even if the cops were to come knocking they would only be disturbing this gentleman.

I just don't enjoy the thought of some ridiculous c*nt getting one up on anybody.

I could see how one might reach that conclusion in this completely hypothetical conversation.

Just think of the Salem witch trials, whether they were burned or not... nothing happened to the ones who pointed the fingers. You couldn't get arrested, but if the party being searched knew who the tipper was, they could take you to court for defamation of character.

I thought the cops can't do something just on a tip...unless they have multiple tips and background evidence on the accused person aka criminal background ect..than yea otherwise they can't do **** and you should go beat there ass

Arrested no, but I'd imagine in the twisted world of America, you'd be able to sue a dozen people, including the police force, the false tipper, God, your dog, etc. and still win.

As always, I think that if the tip ends with the person being portrayed in a negative light, that is probably grounds to sue. After all, isn't "trauma, distress, pain" grounds for a suit? I'm not a lawyer, but I hear that all the time...*

doesnt matter wether they want to sue or not, its still a chargable offense, and like all offenses, you can still be arrested depending on the severity of it. either way, theyll try and get you for it one way or another.

getting involved with the police, especially by giving formal or anonymous tips is just asking for trouble anyway since youre basicly volentarily linking yourself to the case. plus nobody likes a snitch..
