If you do not simply wanna take our word for it, then check out diabloii.net or the Arreat Summit. They explain this in detail. Yes, in a previous version your assumption was correct, however, Blizzard has fixed this bug.

More MF=Better chances to get Magic/Set/Unique.
MF DOES NOT affect what type of item drops.(i.e. normal, exceptional, elite item)
More people in game=better types of items.

Full Game+High MF=Best chances of good drop.

Kao more mf doesnt mean better drops.. more mf means more likely to get a specific item type to be magical/rare/set/unique . an item type has the same odds of dropping no matter what character level you are and what mf you have. it all depends on Mlvl and type of monster (SuperUnique/Act Boss etc.)

Well I usually stick to about 400 - 600 mf but I only meph. But with 400 - 600 i've found about 7 ss's 5 gazes 10 occys 25 titans and a bunch of other crap. Also I have found a valor from meph. I dont remember how much MF i had when i found valor but i do know I had 571 mf (currently) when i found eaglehorn (last night). So maybe this will help some people figure out what good MF for meph is.

I had thesame thing when i was using my meph bot. I had very good drops with 500 mf or less.For example unce i got valor from mephisto also alot titans , gazes,war boots, and alot more.However i agree with u guys too that more mf better drops.There is only one thing which is bather me why i didnt get anything from pindle when i had almost 1000 mf.You may also say that mf is just a luck.

well 550+ mf has worked great for me

510 found me wf tal armor shako shaft in 2 nights...

280 found my friend alot..

my other friend has 580 finds tal armor/shako almost nightly... other has 570 and finds al kinds of shit.. 3 wfs gfs etc

but.. my friend says.. Pindle is all about luck.. he tested pindlebotting on softcore with all diff mfs.. 0,50,100,200,300,400 all the way up to 1000 he didnt really find better stuff with the with mf

My bot is running right now,but it doesnt fing anything good yet except valor and shaffers.I got 491 mf right now however i can use my 1000 mf.With less mf i get better stuf that i can say fo shizl.

Starfish is right...your not gonna find better with exactly 600% mf then if you had 9324% mf. More mf = ALWAYS better.

The more MF the better. However eventually you're going to realize how inefficient the extra MF is due to the diminishing returns. In the end it's your choice. You need 10000000000000000000% MF to have 350% better chance to find Unique Items due to the diminishing returns.
