Sometimes i really doubt there is something more, something deeper than the surface than we create. Is there really a soul inside us or is something we created as an ilusion?

PS: plz no church talk ( thats what made me stop coming here) and what god says..purley what u believe and why.

I don't believe we have anything under our skin other than the obvious bone, blood, muscle and all that. Everything is in the mind. :D

Maybe..... I suck at explaining stuff like this..... The way I think about it, any inner 'force' within you is kinda like..... Thinking? Brain power? Emotion? Damn I suck at describing. But it's all in the mind to me.

I am not religious in anyway. I am an atheist !

But i have believed that people could have a soul or something like it.

One day i had a conversation with a friend, and he was actually able to convince me, that there is no soul.

Since then I have found more prove to that statement, then there was ever that souls exist.

He's explanation was simple:
Every feeling, every mood or temper is created by chemicals.
These chemicals actually create the feeling. The higher the amont that is released, the greater and deeper the feeling is.

Love works in the same way. Ever heard "I can smell you". I don't know if this exists in english, but in german it is used as "I like you".
It refers in a way to the smell of someone, that indecates your good relationship towards him/her.

The smell of a woman transports pheromones. These are gettin thru the nose into the brain of a guy and are stimulating it in a special way, since all women produce differnet pheromones.
In a deep relationship thats enough to create this warm overwhelming feeling known as love. :lovedup

It's just one example. I could go deeper into it, but i haven't sleeped in 16 hours.

But one thing i have to say:

When i first believed that there is no soul, i thought this could lead to a point, in which i will consider humans worth less, since there was nothing special on them/me.
This was completly false. In fact it turned out, that knowing my chemical reactions made me understand myself and the other people better.

Since then i take the word soul like a black box synoym:
You dont know whats in it. You can only whatch whats going in, and what comes out.
Beside the fact that i now belive it is a chemical reaction, that is going on in there, it is pretty much the same thing which other people would name their soul.

I hope that helps you :)

Our soul is not an illusion, VBadGirl (welcome back to AS;) )

Our soul is our consience.

Some of us mute it to death.

Some others confuse consience with the image we would like to project to others or the way other people would like us to be
(examples: my parents want me to be a doctor but i want to be a surfer and i feel guilty because i dont care about what my parents want - my b/f-g/f wants us to go to this utterly boring film, i stay with my friends, she cries, i feel guilty).

The few of us who try to listen to our consience realise that the way to go is quite simple: We must try not to do to other people what we dont want to be done to us.

Aw shit!

Mac, soory mate, but I accedentially spit your post to the Void when I was trying to split Skater's. Sorry. Here it is, so you don't have to dig it up again:

I don't believe in souls, I tend to lean towards the scientific explanation kamille posted, but when you think about it, what do chemicals and all those stimulate? Your brain? Isn't your brain just the composite of billions of individuals of cells... how could each one, incapable of thought, somehow produce my "mind." When I look at something, what is seeing it? It could be light trigger synapses, but I see it, not as electrical sparks in my head, but as a whole image displayed in my consciousness... sorry, I don't know if that makes sense, but the brain is just so confusing to me.

I don't think there's a single thing we aren't "meant" to find out, I just think there are lots of things we can't comprehend right now.

Why would we be meant to not find the answer to something? At the rate of our technolgical growth, within 200 years we could very well reveal the inner depths of humanity, and determine if that ever so elusive God is more than a fairy tale.

lolol still learning his way of moding I guess...we should forgive him this time :p.

hehehe kamille u werent here when I had my post called "gunning down romance". Do a search and read it..its exactly what u are saying. chemicals in our body that produces a chemical reaction(or a chain reaction). there is nothing deeper than that..we are ruled by drugs that flow through our blood.

But does humans be worthless?, do u really need a soul to be worthed to live? And why is that, what a soul benefit us?

. As galatia said its our consience..but is it really? i mean a consience is created and shaped by past experiences and personality. thats how we explain the way differnt ppl vary and how some have more or less.

Should i think some have a better soul than others?..can u really measure a soul or put it in a category?

there are some things we humans were never meant to find out...and thats one of them
i don't believe theres anything above us...to make us think..we not meant to find out.

mac i could give u plenty of human biology classes about the brain if ya want :p..if not very complicated but not yet simple. think of our brain as the cpu of a computer.

Having a soul would really be physically impossible.... How would it be there. But there is imagination, How does that work?

VB, I've been mod here as long as your account has been registered. :p But even us vets aren't immune to mistakes.

Ryan, particles pass though our bodies all the time, with no problem. It would be no different than that.

ok well of course i believe the chemical thing is true to an extent but i can't believe that chemicals are all there is. When you think about it our body is programed to preserve ourselves or our race. eg. we have pheremones becasue we need to be attracted to the oppostie sex in order to reproduce.... chemicals that tell us when we are happy or sad usually alert us to what is good for us and what is detremental to our bodies generally speaking.

However love is an entirely different entity. Love makes someone want to give up their own lives for someone else. Love makes sacrifices and love is more concerned for the other person's well being. I think it is our soul (mind will emotions, identity, conscience etc) that allows us to override the chemicals or whatever and this is what makes us different from animals etc.

if you don't want to read further VBG then don't cause it will mention something about God. (after all i have to back up my opinions) :p

Our souls/spirits are our eternal identity, everything else will fade away but our souls are what defines us as people. Our souls are really the only things that matter. Spike i think we are meant to (or will be able to) comprehend everything but as Macman said there are just some things we can't comprehend right now.

I know about the biology of the brain, what I'm saying is...
Imaging a movie theatre, with a projector and a screen. The light is caught on the screen and displayed as an image right? And we see the image, the screen doesn't "see" the image. So if we are the screen, and the world is the projector, how is it that we can see an image in our thought, rather, what is thought in and of itself? How can we see the image? When we see something, we aren't seeing it as light bouncing off of our brains, but rather projected into our thought, but how can that be? All that's happening is light stimulating a few organic cells, how does that make a collective conscious entity?

edit: aka what is the link between your mental mind and the physical world?...

Chemicals and social culturing can easily explain all of those.

VB, with the ammount of idiots I have to deal with in here, it's a miracle I don't make more mistakes. ;)

Deep shit Mac. Just like when you're talking to yourself. You can form complete full thoughs in your mind. You say things in you mind, in you're own voice, and "hear" it without uttering a word.

how can they? social structure and influence maybe but i still think there are more to people than just chemicals. There is something in humans that is connected to something supernatural, and that isn't an illusion or a social construct. There are ideas of morality, right and wrong, if there were no intrinsic basis for these then 'society' or 'culture' would have forgotten or abandoned them

God accounts for ALOT of things too - doesn't mean you believe it :p
