I was reading up on special powers and alot of people mentioned immortality. So you would live forever? That would suck. You get to see everyone you love die, and well everyone die around you. You would live to lose everything.

Immortality would only hurt the weak, the ones who open their hearts to people. But to the strong, it would be your greatest ally.

So if a loved one died you'd be okay with that? How bout your children dieing before you do? Even your children's children dieing before you? Opening your heart to people can be used against you. You may be immortal but your loved ones probably wouldn't, and your enemies would take advantage of that, they'd kill or destroy everything you once loved. Eventualy you'd close your heart and be able to move on doing whatever you'd like to do. When you'd close your heart you would be able to fight wars without fear, and be able to stand by a war that was 250 years long.....

the way i see it it takes a strong person to get close to someone and risk losing someone they love. it takes a weak person to ignore relationships because of fear of loss.

It would be difficult.
You'd lose so many loved ones, and make new loved ones and lose them. But look at all the things you could witness, you would watch history as its unfolding and see how certain events work out that most mortals would never see. But saying as how basic human instinct makes us want to be close with others the cycle of losing people would never end, unless you blocked yourself off from others, which in a way the wonders you'd see wouldn't be as great seeing them on your own.

you can get used to anything given time.....theres nothing you cant handle if it happens to you enough. it may cause psychological problems later on, after your done losing people, but youd never be done losing people if you were immortal. youd just get hardened emotionally to it.

ooh imortality. well i do believe we are immortal anyway but not in the sense of our earthly bodies. Living on earth forever would be kind of cool. well maybe not forever but for at least 1000 years or something... of course probabilities are that they would try to do scientific testing on you and all kinds of weird stuff. that wouldn't be fun. being an immortal vegetable. But theoretically living and seeing changes in the world, being a living history would be amazing! Its kind of like Bicentennial man though. in the end he just wanted to die.

If you guys have ever read any of Fitzgerald's work, he wrote a story called "Winter Dreams."

In the story, the main character accomplishes everything that he has ever wanted to in life. He is superior to all of his peers / relatives, and he can have anything.

In the end of the story, he breaks down crying. Why? Because he has nothing more to conquer. His life is pointless.

Its the journey thats fun, not always the results.

And immortality would be a lonley thing. Theres also a good chance that you would go psycho.

I would hate to be immortal, like I said before, not only because you would have to watch everyone you know die. It's death that gives life meaning; the knowledge that you don't have all the time in the world is what motivates you to accomplish something while you have time. If you're immortal, you have all the time you need and therefore have no real reason to exist. Your life no longer has a purpose. So I think no matter what kind of person you are, you would just end up wishing for death.

eH? You meant that the other way around right?

Yea, I think most people in here agree that immortality would do any of these things:

  1. Cause severe depression from loss
  2. Cause the immortal to suffer from insanity
  3. Take the meaning out of the immortal's life
    [/list=1]

    Wham bam thank you ma'am.

No, I don't mean that the other way around. Didn't you read all of what I said? Life has meaning because it's short, because you only have a certain amount of time to accomplish what you want to before you die. That's why being immortal would just take the meaning out of life.

Have you seen the movie or read the book "Tuck Everlasting"? In it, this family becomes immortal, and they talk about how their life no longer has purpose because they've already accomplished everything they wanted to. The older of the two sons says how he hates being immortal because he can't get attached to anyone -- he had a wife and children, but they all died. They're just kind of bored with life because it no longer holds meaning for them. That's the point I'm trying to get across.

Why would it be lonely? People will die, yes but you'll still have friends and people die anyway.

Films and books ain't like the real thing, new roller coaster rides will come out (lol), new technology and new situations.. Life just doesn't get boring like that, while there are other people you can still do things. If you conquer the world there will still be things to do like managing it all.

Immortality would be an ultimate punishment next to hell. Living your enterinty seeing the people you love die, watching the world fall apart with the wars to come, and not being able to live in heaven with God and Jesus. I would hate to be immortal. I do not fear death. Immortality, I think, is terrible.
