Hurt by nine inch nails

i looked up that nine inch nails forum a little while ago and people came up with the idea that the song "hurt" was talking about and relating to heroin. although id never really thought about it that way, when you keep it in mind and listen to it again you can really tell where they get the idea. do you think they are right?

It has that one small line that makes it sound like hes going to shoot up...but other than that it just sounds like the true feelings of a Manic Depressive, which trust me...I can tell you all about that one. The end of the song is kinda like his way of retaliation...somewhat violent yet somewhat...ok I guess. I used to listen to this song a lot...

I guess he means that when he shoots up all he has became is his only friend.

I'd rather inturpret it as when he shoots it up, he does it to release himself only it makes him critique his purpose in life even further, making him feel like a bigger piece of shit. As for the sweetest friend, He refers to no one. Keep reading further down a few lines, and it makes that a little more clear.

The song is in 4 line stanzas...thats the part that makes the sense. He's saying he has no one.

for the first part i quoted, he would talk about injecting the heroin and the needles slight pain, which is "the only thing he feels".

in the second one, when he says "try to kill it all away" hes probably talking about why people take heroin, which is to forget about bad times.

and for the last one, when he says "the feelings disappear," hes talking about the effect of heroin.

that would be my best guess as to how to relate it to heroin. ive never actually thought about it as a song about heroin until yesterday

I still think that besides stating the obvious, the song is much deeper than that. Why isn't our resident poet checking this? That might help a bit =/

Of course the song is about heroin. I haven't really evaluated it much deeper because I haven't heard it in a while and my nin cd with that song on it is missing, and kazaa raped that song with the static thing...

This is just basically stating to me that the needle opens a hole in his skin as he's taking the Heroin, and trying to kill all thats happening around him, but he still remembers things.(I just realized I stated the obvious here haha....)

What I get out of this is That this growing addiction to heroin, is slowly becoming his "sweetest friend" taking him away from reality.
