I was mearly assuming that he was Classic D2, so I decided to just write up a mini-mf guide specifically for Classic D2. If he is Xpac, then I'll write a more apropriate mf guide.
Oh, and I would like to point out that I have updated the MF Guide, describing stat point distribution, and more in-depth of your mf strategy, and what the main skills do for you.

the way i like to do it, is start off with a main killer,usually a hamerdin is best bcuz they can mf with skill aswell, and then build myself up a bot sorc with the items that the hammerdin found

Just level up, picking up any gear with MF that you find. Once you have some decent MF gear, start mfing NM Andy and Meph. Just keep doing this until you find some better gear, then go on to Hell runs. That's what I always do, anyway.

Just wait for items in those "free stuff" games. I actually got some exceptional items back when I still played Diablo 2 (ie Buriza, Occy, parts of Tal Rasha set, Homun, Wizardspike, Shako, Lidless, Gore Riders, money, and gems)

startoff by making a [summon]necro. they need no items to be diecent...and theyll help you out.
lvl the necro to lvl 80 or so, when your in nm around lvl 40-50, do pit runs (outside of dark woods somewhere) go through killign everything. while your lvln ur necro try to wear as much MF gear as you can (everytime you see an item with mf, get it, once u have alot, say u have a 12mf amy, then say u find a 20, switch to the higher mf amy, do that with all gear)
pit running will find you some good noob gear. with that create a sorc, do nm meph once you create your sorc. nm meph will be the key here. he is able to drop things like vamp gaze and believe it or not, skulllders...along w/ wizspike and multiple other items...use these items to create a better sorc, eventually doing pindle runs. pindle drops very good, but not often. you will often kill him 100 times and never find a good item, but when he DOES drop, its an elite item.
eventually youll want to make a barb or a pally, that way you can do all around runs. (ie pindle / meph / andy / tower) in one game. once you create a character that can do this you will quickly advance up the ladder
