ok i'm not trying to say i know everything about It or say that it sucks or anything but I have noticed a bunch of people at my school are just rejects (loners/losers) that really have no friends, and they try to be noticed somehow by wearing black makeup and shit. from my stand point, these are somewhat posers much like blink tryng to be punk. why is it that there are so many goth psers yet not that many prep/jock/punk ppl?

Allot of them probably aren't goths at all. Period. It's sad how trends and cliques are now days, because it really gives a bad name to the people who really understand the gothic culture. This goes for anything though...not just gothics. Almost anything like that is missinterpreted by people, and made into some form of popularity contest. Then it totally looses all meaning, and everyone get's the wrong idea of the lifestyle is really all about. It has a history, over hundreds of years, people just think they know what they're talking about.

But yeah, being gothic is a lifestyle...not a fashion statement. Sure wearing the typical dark goth clothing can be part of it, but that's just the thing...it's only part of it, and it doesn't even have to be. You can wear whatever you want to, and still be a goth. You don't just put on some black clothing, black makeup, and listen to angry music to be a goth. That isn't what it's all about...and allot of goth music isn't even usually angry (which is funny)! Sadly though, that's today's stereotype for gothics, because many of the people who claim to be gothic are just doing it for attention, and don't even know the first thing about what gothic is suppose to be. They aren't all "posers" as you say, but many of them are just trying to stand out by rebelling.

Those you talk about are probably just angry kids trying to stand out. Not goths. As for your main question of this post, I don't really know how to answer it...because I don't pay attention and worry about other people I don't even know.

...and who says blink 182 are posers? They has punk influences. They may not be actual punk, but I don't think they've ever claimed to be.

Roach since you seem to know a lot about it, can you give me a nice definition on what a goth is?

Ok, this is what I know about goth, I am not a goth, and I have no goth friends (not by choice....just don't know any), but this is what I think is goth:

A gothic person is someone who knows there is a time for happyness and a time for sadness. They aren't obsessed with death like alot of people think. They try to balance their life, feel the better of both sides. They understand you cannot be a happy-go-lucky person all the time, but you can sometimes. Its about being balanced. They find beauty in things that others can't, and they aren't afraid to be diffrent. And for people that think goth music is angry....The Cure isnt angry...neither is Souixie and the Banshees, or any of those guys.

I don't think there's an actual definition, because gothics can think on their own, and don't have to follow certain rules...but they do base their lifestyle on the history of it. Gothics have been around for many many years. The gothic lifestyle is actually a subculture of the Romantics...they kept many of the same traits that the romantics had, but had a huge focus on poetry, literature, art, and the interests of medieval times. They find beauty in many things that others would find un pleasant or frightening. They also were known to have very big imaginations, and showed it through their artwork and writings. Today, gothics aren't the same...obviously, because society has changed so much...but they still follow the things that the subculture was based and created on.

A gothic person is basically someone who understands, and finds beauty in life AND death. They choose to embrace the darkness, and are not afraid of death (the black clothing and makeup is just representing of this fact). They live on their own terms, but share the same interests with each other. Literature, Art, and Music are a huge part of it now. It's just a way of thinking and living.

People mistake them for being angry because of how they look...but today allot of people think being angry and dressing dark is gothic.

There's no Definition for Gothic. It's a title.
Gothic is a style/shape of Buildings. It's Mainly used 12th Century Churches.
So there is no Definition and it not a Religion. Its practically slang for people who Dress Dark or have "Dark Thoughts".

I think the type of people in your school is just based on where you live. If you live in a rich area, there will be tons of preps and such than if you live in a projects you know?

Perhaps you should read this thread over. I mean rules of being gothic. There really are none. Yes, there are things that you do to be gothic, but it doesn't confine you from doing other things you want to do.

I wear those black plastic bracelets, because I love black and think the bracelets look good on me. I actually get asked if I'm gothic for that fact. Also because I dyed my hair black. Black is my favorite color, not my social self. ^^;

OMG YEW MUST BE A POSER...

I hate when people act like that too. Yes, there are posers, but if you wear black or something, people automatically think you're tyring to fit into something. What if you just like black!?!?! *gasp*.

But Yessir! Black is a good color. Black and red are my favorite colors...even my hair is black and red!

If you guys are trying to tell me that "posers" dont piss yu off you have not met the right people. *story time* okay there is a girl in my school who is a total loser/no friends/un-attractive and she all of a sudden starts to wear all black and call herself goth and whatever, however I have known her since I was in grade 5 and she used to never be like this.

so? why would this anger you? is she coming up to you and deliberatly TRYING to anger you? I dont think its her getting you angry, you're just making yourself angry. i dont know why. but if i knew some loser kid that no one ever liked, and he started dressing up punk or w/e and getting some new friends, what would i care? people change, if thats what he wanted to do go let him, as long as he doesn't bother me im fine.
