I know the story you're talking about. The court did not rule that gay marriage was illegal, or ammend the state Constitution to prohibit it. It merely ruled that the actions taken by the San Fran mayor, Newsome, were illegal, and that he overstepped his bounds.
I'm talking more about the cases in Missouri (they recently ammended their state Constitution to prohibit gay marriage, and the recently thrown out FMA.
