Because he so called invented the races that Gygax eventually implemeneted in his D/D schema. However, he didn't invent games so he cannot be the Grandfather of RPG.

The Modern Fantasy Genre was pretty much created by Tolkien, as everything since then in terms of High fantasy can be traced back to Tolkien.

Since D/D is all fantasy (correct me if I'm wrong I have a life so I don't know ) One could say the vary basic element behind it is derived from Tolkiens work, so Tolkien had a hand in creating the D/D universe you know.

Then that means that Gutenberg is the great grandfather of RPG's because he made the first printing press, which eventually led to Tolkien's items being published which led to ....

Yeah, no, Tolkien shouldn't get **** credit for DnD. Not to mention he actually stole a lot of his ideas from mythology and ****.

Becuase tolkien basically created an alternate universe using that mythology in case you didnt know theres more than just lotr he did giving each race a written and spoken language and chronilogical history. not to mention he did this around the time gyrax was being born. to say he didnt have a hand in how we look at rpgs today would be a shame

I wrote a 15+ page paper on Tolkien, his works, his life, and what he did for modern fantasy.

Theres a very very very good chance I know more about Tolkien than everyone on this site, just off the info I learned from doing the paper. I literally picked up every book about him, about his work, and about his life I could and read them all. I know Tolkiens **** in and out, and what I'm saying is that people saying "lol tolkien is the grandfather of rpgs" is retarded.

Did he do a lot for modern fantasy? Yeah, of course. I'm not saying he didn't. But that doesn't mean he should be credited for DnD like you guys are apparntly trying to do.

Not that he "had a hand in creating DND" But DND would likely not exist if Tolkien hadn't been around.

Yes but not the RPG game itself. And technically it is the "Father" of RPG, not the "Father" of High fantasy.
