Why were assault weapons banned?

The ban doesn't make sense. We are a free nation, our goverment doesn't have the right to tell us what we can and can't have (Unless you are a felon you forfit your rights once you commit a felony)

assault rifles unbanned? big ****ing deal. no one needs an assault rifle to kill someone, and anyone that wants one for some high-level job is gonna get one wether they are illegal or not.

now im not saying lets give everybody an m16, cause thats way out of control, im all for regulation. but its not like all hell is going to break loose now that assault weapons arent banned.

btw, while i dont know the specifics of this ban, im pretty sure all the weapon ban does is prevent new assault rifles from entering the civillian market. any existing weapons are "grandfathered in", meaning they can still be bought, sold, used, etc(within state and federal laws regarding weapon use). the ban makes it so there is a static number of legal firearms, meaning if a gun manufacturer wants to sell a new rifle, they have to turn in a previously registered rifle of the same class, therefore keeping the number of legal assault weapons at the same level.

there are about 14 states in the US where it is completely legal to own and use an automatic weapon, if you have appropriate permits and such(meaning you have to go through rigorous federal background checks and stuff, if you have a single spot on your record you arent going to be able to own one).

guns dont kill people, people kill people. take away the guns and they will find other ways.
