This is perfectly in tune with a broader patern of religiously-sanctioned islamic social norms which have for objective the infantilisation and subjugation of women.

Actualy, Malaysia is pretty out there when it comes to religious retardness. Rejected appeals to practice the religion of your choice, the banning of Jesus during Christmas, the stealing by islamic authorities of babies who are raised by "infidels", the censorship of newspapers who "dared" to reprint the Mohamed Cartoons, the Malaysian Islamic Development Department calling a crackdown on apostates, heck, the segregation of women and men in different lines in the supermarket.

Why is Malaysia brought up as an exemple of a modern civilized islamic country, I wonder.

Malaysia Islamist party pushes for sharia penalties

KAMPUNG PULAU MELAKA, Malaysia (Reuters) - A leader of Malaysia's Islamist party, which made surprising gains in March elections, wants its secular allies to apply strict sharia law, which include amputations and stonings for Muslims.

The hardline Parti Islam se-Malaysia (PAS) has enacted such laws in its Kelantan stronghold to punish rapists and adulterers with stoning to death, while thieves would lose their limbs.

However, the country's Federal government has barred PAS from enforcing the laws.

PAS and other opposition parties wrested control of five of Malaysia's 13 states in the March election as voters punished the ruling coalition for concerns ranging from rising crime to racial tensions.

But analysts have said it would be tough for PAS to broaden its appeal due to its advocacy of the punishments called for by strict Muslim religious law, known as sharia or hudud, which scare off non-Muslims who see the party as a fundamentalist clique.

"Islam is a moderate, soft religion," PAS spiritual leader Nik Aziz Nik Mat told Reuters late last week in the northeastern state of Kelantan, the party's stronghold for the past 18 years.

"We took small steps to introduce Islam as a way of life in Kelantan. We would like to do the same in the other states that have fallen to the opposition."

Half of Malaysia's 26 million people are ethnic Malays, who by definition are Muslims. Ethnic Chinese and Indians, the largest two minority groups, are either Hindus, Buddhists or Christians.

-Living as a religious minority under muslim rule is only possible under a policy of systemic discrimination, where religious minorities can't build new worship places (churches, synagogues), can't repair the old ones, cant spread peacefully their religion, can't display religous symboles or any religious affiliation at all, and where their only right is to give up their religion and convert to Islam.

Even if the statut of dhimmi was socialy progressive 1400 years ago, its unsettling when people, today, try to pass it up as a modern expresion of religious tolerance.

- They acknowledges the existence of Jesus.... as a muslim figure, who's going to come back at the end of times to say that he wasnt really the son of God , that he was never really crucified, that he was never resurected, and that it was all just a big prank all along. I doubt a lot of Christians agree with this "interpretation" of the figure of Jesus. This appropriation by Islam isnt suprising, from a religion that conquered so many christian territories. Those christians who had been conquered had to be governed and eventualy converted eventualy.

Moral equivalency alert! So all religion are equaly intolerant and violent, eh? Thats why in the Bible there is not a single line that justify violence, while in the Koran, you can find plenty. Thats why Christianity isnt seriously invoqued to legitimise violence and conquest, while Islam is still usefull to justify blowing yourself in a bus full of british citizens.
