As my years of playing D2 grow, I have found that alot of long time players and newer ones alike have interesting stories behind their playtime career with this game. How they got into it, why? How long have they played? Closed/Ladder/Open/Single? Do they play with friends, randomn people, clans or party groups or just by themselves? What characters do they like andplay with? What other games do they play if any?
I find this stuff interesting so I wouldnt mind seeing what other people think and what their careers in D2 have been like. Hopefully people participate and jump in, because this could be fun and a break from the constant talk of gameplay.
Here is my story,
I hadn't heard of D2 in Nov 00' when i first saw my friend playing it....I actually laughed at him and told him thatwas the crappiest looking game I had ever seen. All that clicking and little characters running around looked silly. I had been only playing games like Mechwarrior4 and Age of Empires 2 online, as well as lots of racing, FPS, action adventure games....the only RPG i had actually played seriously was FF IX and X up to that point.
But this is where my obsession began....i still saw my friend playing everyday for a couple hours a week later, and i watched him and he explained about skills, character classes, leveling up and the item system. He convinced me to give it a try with his barb and from there we took the game down to my house and installed it....We did not sleep till 7am. I totally took over his copy from there for a few days, so he went out and got me my own copy for my birthday and we played a whole lot from there.
I convinced several other people to get the game and play over the next few months till I had over a dozen peopleplaying. We all played TCP/IP games as many of us couldnt get our 56k to coop with Bnet. I however would always head to open to trade and show download skills lamers who was boss through a short phase of dueling where i racked up almost 2 characters with ears...many of which were from pretend hackers.
Since then I have played D2 on and off with the same friend i originally played with...we cannot find a substitute and started playing closed only since about patch 1.04 or 5. We usually play twice a year for 3-6 weeks on average...usually only ended by some really annoying act from Bnet. The last of which was when 3 of our 4 accounts got deleted right before 1.10 (Sept 30, 03)....ironically we actually were totally legit people to the core. The one account that we had botted with and left botting usually for a couple days at a time was the one that didnt get deleted..... I specifically seem to have an aura of bad luck with anything to do with D2.
Anyway wrapping up..i think more than anything my char of choice has been the Pally as I take to being a leader/organiser. In total i think i hav massed about 12 chars in the 90's...but have never gone further than 93..one of which had never seen internet play. I have also backed them up with a few dozen level 80's chars and nothing lower.
Right now I have started again 3 weeks ago. I havent played like I usually do, only two weekends....and now this week i have played about 1-2 hours since the patch got released. I have been having issuesstaying connected to bnet for more than a few minutes. My two previous chars that were ladder are 78 and 75 ..the latter was an assasin that hit its level in less than 24 hours on a normal day where i spent more time away out and is my best quick char build yet. That warm up got me ready for the new ladder. I havent played much, but my level 34 pally is waiting to play tonight if i can stay connected.

Dont worry, when u talk as much as me and know this game so well such a damn long post tends to flow out in about 5 minutes. I don'texpect it to get many reads but it was fun anyway. Hopefully more people join in...no matter how abbreviated their post is or how little they have played.
