I wonder that What does the gem do? (in the middle of screen in chat area)

It does nothing. According to Blizzard it was put in for players to puzzle about.

it was going to be a chat function, but was scrapped, just like the age box in 1.09 and earlier, it was there but of no use.

Minny, a good friend of mine checked it and it's purely client side. In order for it to do anything in game or out it would need to send an actual message to the server.

@bigfathomo, it was going to be a chat gem, how would you trade via voice? "soj for sigon, accept?" that just wouldnt work. people say items wrong, not to mention all the diff ways ppl talk, that wouldnt be working at all.

They could have both people's item's stats available on request (By both people). That way if somebody lied it would be obvious. But I'm probably wrong.

so, your saying, inchat, there would be a program that logs every item in your pocession along with its stats...and make it possible to trade by voice recognition...?

Oh, no. It should be trading by text. It should show the stats and names of each item you put up for trade. But then it gets all complicated and messy.
