That would make sense if it didn't keep resending me one every hour, on the hour, with a sequence of numbers from different times. Not to mention all the messages I get from my friends come as normal time.

He can't do that. Time is linear. Unless, the time machine doesnt modify the time settings on his phone and he messaged it when he was in the timeframe.
