I was wondering why people would buy an Athlon XP. From what I've been looking at their clock speeds are slower than the P4's and they have a slower FSB, but prices are about the same for a pentium processor that is much better than the Athlon. What makes them good?

That's just wrong. The Athlon's have a different technology which gives them the same performance as comparable P4's, with lower clockspeeds. This allows them to be sold for lower prices.

But they aren't sold at that much of a lower price, and your saying that a lower clock speed/bus speed Athlon will perform the same as a P4 that is clocked faster? How?

As i said in another thread (as WQ87):

P4's pipeline is longer, the reason why it needs to run at a higher speed to match up with a Athlon XP/64 in performance.

A Barton 2500+ 1.8ghz would be equivalent to a P4 2.4ghz.

The Athlon 64 is somewhat superior because using it's 64-bit technology, it can run 32-bit programs with virtually no problems. (all is depending on your hardware too):)
