A cookie-cutter build (Basically, a build that everyone else uses in duels and basically in general.) or a unique build that is totally different from what everyone else uses or different enough not to e placed as something tons of people use just because tons of other people use it. Normally, which would you rather use? I've seen unique builds and they look to be great fun. I have tried a cookie-cutter build once and I did not like it. Your thoughts?

If im making a serious dueling character, I usually make an altered cookie cutter build. In other words most mainstream builds aren't perfect, and I try to make them perfect. Usually, it's only with barb's though, since they're the only class i duel with...plus I know more about them then other characters

This is kind of a loaded question DM, but anyways, I vote Unique. Because, I love to see what alternatives are out their. Granted some do not work well, but I try. This seems to be the only injoyment out of D2 these days for me. To play a bit of devils advocate, some "cookie-cutter builds" are not bad. Seriously, who here does not have a Hammerdin, Bone Necro, and/or, Orb sorc. At some point everyone has, or had one or more of them.

I'd be funny if you got owned by a non-generic build, N_. I respect people who atleast try something different then a mainstream build. I don't hate people who do only mainstream, but I wonder how they can consider the game to be fun if they are like the next guy ho joins the game, same gear, maybe a different charm selection, that's it. A loaded question indeed, but a good one to see how people really think.

thats the thing, you cant get owned by these unique builds, they arent strong enough, unless you can pull something crazy out of your hat.

I invented Nova sorcs, so I guess my unique build became cookiecutter?

And if you don't belive me, thats fine. Way back before LoD came out, before the patch that changed Lightning Mastery to do damage, when it used to cut mana down (god, I bet 90% of you didn't even know that) I had a nova sorc in anticipation of the new patch. The patch hit (1.07, right?) and I had a lvl 66 sorc with 20 in the mastery, 20 in warmth, 20 in nova. She owned then, and she would prolly still own now if they retardedass Synergies didn't come out.

Yeah, believe me if you want, I'll always remeber that I was the first good nova sorc around, it's just what I did.

good point those "cookie-cutter builds" had to be unique builds at some point. So I guess, if those unique builds were done right everyone would want them too.

Yeah, cookie-cutter builds had to be uniquje at one point and time. But how many builds do you see that are unique and that work being copyed by everyone else? Not too meny. I think most people would takre someone elses word on the ''leet builds'' rather then try and make a totally new one themselves.

Cookie cutter is a term used to make an exact copy of a character. Like everyone has a Hammerdin using all same gear, charms, skills, stats ect.
Well DM good example for unique build to cookie cutter is your classic Wind Druid build. 1.09, no one was making them, but, 1.10 all of a sudden they pop up everywhere. I had one in 1.09 everyone was like they suck, then 1.10 and they were everywhere.

Honestly? I have never made a sorceress....i did just make a hammerdin and i have had a bone necro however....I didn't realise till after I wasnt a newb anymore that i really had some unique builds that werent as popular as others....a martial arts asn with no chaos.....a fury druid.....a melee/caster paly with vengeance/foh/conviction as main skills.....

Another point I would like to make is that cookie cutter builds are popular for a reason...they're stronger than most builds

Yeah. Stronger to the point that the game is the same everytime you play it. Which is fun to an extent, right? I would think that some people quit because the game isn't fun anymore and that there's no reason to play because they won't try new builds. I would rather have fun with a pretty good build that's unique and way different then anything else then be totally bored with a cookie-cutter build.
