Where to start

I have Photoshop, and I've been messing around with it for about an hour. Nothing. I can't figure out how to do shit.

Do I need other programs to make sweet sigs, or is Photoshop ok?

Where do I start?? I filled my canvas...then I'm like...okay...that's where my knowledge ends.

I need some serious help. Any suggestions on what to do first?

File>New>Gradient>Filter after filter after filter>File>New>Gradient>Filter, filter, some text, filter...Repeat...
