If your making a summon Druid don't bother they suck trust me. Non the less, you are going to do it anyways, so let me give options on spirits.
The spirit that gives thorns, don't bother, if you want thorns get the act 2 merc that does it. the spirit that gives life is great, but since they can be recasted at whim, the only real perpous is for you and the rest of your party. Now damage, will definitly be needed for you to do anything at all, and IMO is the only real spirit worth using for summons. Your pick though.

Sorry haven't played in a while and forgot the names.

When soloing (going back and finishing off quests after b-running, I know I have to explain this so you dont tell me never to solo), I have been using my lvl 48 summon dru to clear out crowds that my lvl 76 bear dru cant handle - and he is WAY better than my lvl 84 summon necro by far. So you cant convince me that they suck. My necro dies constantly, my summon dru hasnt died ONCE (so I am thinking I should make a summon dru for my very first HC chr).

With all summons maxed out, all the animals are pretty well rounded when it comes to life, att and dmg. I thought I should do the thorns spirit to give them something they dont have..... but everyone is convincing me not to. So thanks Sworn, thats the info I was looking for - which effect will make them better handle hell. Thanks!

If you want to stand back and let all summons kill I would suggest this then:
Get a Metalgrid Amulet, it will add insane def to you and you can also cast a Iron Golem. It also has Thorns on it.
Don't bother maxing out the vines, it's rather pointless.
Use a Bow & Arrow (their is a runeword bow that can revive, forgot name though)or Hoto for the +2 and faster cast. Obviously CtA on switch with spirit monarch shield.
Nigma to tele, (you probably know when you tele with minions they act as a shield)
Act 2 Holy freeze or Prayer (suggested) merc will come in handy, with a insight weapon, Coh and a gaze helm
put 1 point into the wind armor after + skills you will be fine with it.
put 1 into the freeze beam skill (forgot name again) will help you in a pinch

If you want to do some hand to hand combat put 1 into werewolf, lycanthropy, and fury, after + skill you will do some good damage. Use grief, Botd, and their is a necro wand that does some serious posion damage.
good luck.

The poison creeper will at lvl 20 do 84-86 poison damage with 333 life. You would have to contantly recast that in nm or hell since they will kill it in one shot. Lastly their is only one place I know that has physical immunes that is act 3 hell to get the book quest. Also fighting the ubers, but you wont last 1 second in their with a summon Druid build. If you really want to keep physical immunes away try out the artic blast, but thats under elemental and not a summon.
IMO like stated before the Summon Druid build is worthless, but, try it if you want.

The reason Im asking has changed since I first posted the Q - now Im trying HC for the first time, and want to start really cautiously and stay out of the fray and make pets or minions fight for me from the beginning. My all-summon necro dies all the time and is totally weak in non-HC, the summon Dru is way stronger...... so any suggestions then (plz!) what kind of chr I should do to get lvls and items (like I said I am just starting and have NOTHING)? You know I like my "theme builds" but for this first one I will go with whatever build you suggest. I like mf Barbs but they die all the time too...... Dont have the kind of connection to run mf bots all the time (or like ever). Please advise, thanks.

Well, if you are playing HC, think what is the most enjoyable class for you that can survive normal games. The reason I say this is because you will be familar with the character and have less chance of errors on lvling.
Do you like to stand back and cast, or get in the middle of things and melee? Since you are, if I may say it, "poor" try a cleric Pally. They are the best party characters ever, and in HC they are a rareity, but needed.
If this does fir you, try a lightning sorc, or trapsins, their are few immunes to it, and it will do massive damage.
For Melee, a ww barb, Zealer, ect. Let me know what you like character wise, I will do my best to do something for ya.

Remember the long back-and-forth we had about the Medic Pally a month ago? That’s the guy I want to remake in HC now, but need to lvl up another guy first to get him some good stuff and twink him from lvl 1. Just wondering if there is a chr with the lowest death-rate that Im not aware of. Doesn’t matter what kind, he just needs to hold his own based on skills since I don’t have anything good to put on him. Do some mf runs for a sig set or something, then put that on the medic pally and off I go. I started a Necro, so I know I wont be able to handle Hell, but at least Im confident Ill get there. Didnt think about a trapsin...... never played one b4.

Trapsins are relatively easy to build, but since you are starting off with nothing I would suggest a character that is great def and off. IMO A Pally is the best option. Make a quick zealer, just get some leech items and your good. Even a weapon with a Perfect Skull will leech enough from any monster (but undead of course) back that up with duel regen items (P skull in helm will do) then you should be ok.
If you are affaid of dying in melee lag, then make a sorc. I don't know how your playing style is so I can't say what would truely work best for you. I would suggest staying away from summoning, since that would mean relying on your minions to stay alive. Once they are gone your toast.
Only other thing would be to make a barb and max out iron skin, life, and a skill that would kill mass monsters, like Wirl Wind.

Lol ya my Dru Summoner 22 got killed when my pets died and I panicked and ran around in circles instead of poping a pot or tping – didn’t think of it lol

Style? Probly toe-to-toe mostly. Pallys are funnest/strongest, but die occasionally (once too many for HC), Barbs are fun/not so strong and die too much (although I like your idea, maybe an mfer) but will your suggestion for him last in higher difficulties? Long range is frustrating and I will never make a Zon (hate em), Sorcs are ok but are too restrictive. Sins too. My Summon and Bear Dru’s are the chrs that have died on me the least, if at all.

You play HC? East or west?

Try this make a werewolf druid
Str - 156
Dex - 219
Life - all the rest
Energy - wont need it

Skills
Lycanthropy - 1
Werewolf - 20
Feral rage - 1
Rabies - 20
Fury - 20
Poison Creeper - 20
Oak Sage - 20
Artic Blast - 1
Cyclone Armor - 1

This will give you insane poison damage that spreads to any nearby enemy, Fury will give you the same as zeal for a pally, and the 1 into cyclone armor will take all damage (except for poison) for a short time.

If you need a meatshield, try this:
Lycanthropy - 1
Werewolf - 20
Feral rage - 1
Rabies - 20
Fury - 15
Poison Creeper - 20 (synergy to Rabies)
Oak Sage - 20 ( dont go heart of wolverine, no point in more damage if you die from lack of life)
Artic Blast - 1
Cyclone Armor - 1
Raven - 1
Spirit Wolves - 1
Dire Wolves - 1
Grizzly - 1
(got one left over point, put it into the dire wolves or grizzly)
