There is a big diffrence between the SC and WC3 editors. But one big thing that hits WC map makers is the complexity and flexibility of the editor. When WC map makers attempt to make maps, they will achive their goal, but even when they finish, they barely use the maximum of what the editor is capable of. When the maker is finished, it appears noobish, and unfinished in a way. SC on the other hand, has a limited amount of units, allowing the microing and maximum use of the SC editors. What makes map making fun for me? Its the limitations. (lronic)

I get the same feeling. I feel like I do a really good job when I max out the abilities of SC Map making because I used every aspect possible. That's what I like about it.

The problem with the WC3 editor is there are no limits, which is bad in way, but also allows for a map so good, you will die from overplay.

I like theWC3 map editor because pretty much EVERYTHING can be edited, and u have more freedom. i know too much freedom is a bad thing-but still its a good thing to have. it allows for tons and tons of new maps-even thought sc has a limited freedom, they have like 50 names for ONE map(and it only has a few changes-like u start out with FIFTY exra mineral! oh wow!) tons and tons of things can be edited on on wc3 to make the best possible maps without making rip-offs of another type of map(like on sc) its also fun being able to customize units on wc(which was limited in sc). i think the BEST thing about the WC editor is the freedom of unit changes

Blah, the only real reason I still stick with (besides the fact that I don't have W3 :p) is that W3 can't have hundreds of moving units on screen at once like starcraft ;). Not that I use hundreds of units on screen, but my point is that because of the more primative and less processor intensive sc engine, you can do more shit on a larger scale than you can in W3, flexability or no. I think the "exploiting limitations" fun factor is about dead for me at this point, however. I think its fair to say I've seen just about everything in SC, so now its time for me to get to cranking out the serious maps and then moving on.

Well... i'm a REAL newb at map-making and i don't even have WarCraft 3 so i shouldn't really be judging this.... but i have played one warcaft 3 ums and it kind of.... sucked.... in a way. i'm not sure how but it just did!
but for number 1
starcraft makers have been around WAY before new WC3!
2
Starcraft makers r more experienced are (seem) more imaginative(just an opinion)
3
i like sc more....
4
warcraft do have more freedom so the slouch off and don't use the map editer to its full potential.... SC makers are limited and they use the map editer + new programs to inhance thier maps. So in other words SC maps have more quality and are almost sure to garintee a good game. ( if u have good players and a good mapmaker)

so thats just all i can think about right now! so.. yeah.. ok

I find i need to start using the WC3 editor because i'm just getting repeaditive on my SC maps. I'm just just just staqrting out on the WC3 but i learn fast. But I know the triggers will take me a long time.

The reason making maps in SC is so much funner is that WC3 has very little in limitations. No matter what you do there's always a way to add something more... and more... and more... and it never ends, you never get that feeling of completion you do with SC.

Also, a lot of things work better in starcraft than the same thing does in WC3 (just doesn't look good because of the 3d).

I'm pretty sure I mastered almost every aspect of trigger editing there was in SC, besides the AI scripts, but I'll never achieve that in WC3. (mainly because some of the triggers don't behave corretly... and JASS)

For me, map macking is way cooler in SC than in W3. You see, since I can't really understand how to do stuff... Well, W3 is just really complicated compared to SC.

Once youg et the idea in wc3 you can do anything... which is why I prefer it.

Possibly people can say they like sc better because it has limits, but thats whats so great about wc3, it has NO LIMITS at all. Atleast none that i've truly encountered.

I mean sure you cant go over 8913 objects in an array, and there are a few maximum doodads and things limited to 6114, but those are pretty high anyways. So once you do hit the limits, you'll be thinking "woah, i cant blieeve it theres a limit" but in SC, the limit is so low you can barely do anything. Warcraft III let's you break the bonds of reality.

If you're resourceful enough, the limits really arn't all that debilitating. At least, for nearly 95% of what you'd want to accomplish with Starcraft, anyway. But you do have to have more skill to accomodate for those limits, which is why W3 might seem more appealing.

Another major reason I stick with Starcraft over W3 is that, unlike W3, Starcraft is one of those "legendary" games that raised the bar when it came out. Like all the other legendary games: Wolfenstein, Doom, Everquest, Mario 64, Zelda, Halo, et al., Starcraft will never be forgotten.

Sure, it will steadily grow less popular, but it has left its permenant mark, whereas W3 will eventually putter out and be forgotten as another "Just another RTS"... maybe not entirely, since it is a Blizzard product, but it won't be remembered like Starcraft will when the next great one comes out.

How old is starcraft? pretty old i'd say... and when it first came out i started playing it. i still am. I agree with Templar, starcraft is definitly better than WC3. true u can do alot of stuff with warcraft. almost anything. but starcraft still far outstrips it in qualtity and fun playing

Reading through this thread has made me wonder about the "SC2" editor... be cool if bliz could make a flexible but at the same time limiting... I dunno for me ive been SC mapping for a month after quitting SC for a long time (lol like a year or two after it came out I stopped playing?), and the challenging thing for me is to figure out what to do that isn't like other maps. Maybe when WC3 editing gets worn thin of new ideas i'll try it out... but WC3 isn't a game you come back to. SC I could play 20 years from now and still appreciate it for what it is. And thats what I like about SC map editing its using what you got to do your best... (even if my best sucks).
