I was just scuttling about on dogpile looking for Diablo 3 info, when I stumbled upon (*cliche* :doh ) http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2006/08/an_interview_wi.html

This may be old news, but I dont see anything about it here (possibly because all the latest posts were deleted:( )

But anyway if you dont want to check out that site, I'll bring out the important for you (by the way, this is an interview between Mike Morhaime (Blizzard's president) and Dean Takahashi):

Q: Are you going to do a movie with the Warcraft universe?

A: Yes, we are. It’s something we have been wanting to do from the beginning. We have always thought the universe was rich enough to make a great movie. Really we are taking a time to find a great partner. Anyone who has seen movies based on games knows that it’s pretty easy to have them come out not right. We wanted to have a partner with the same vision of how epic and cool this could really be. We are thrilled to have found Legendary. They share a lot of our philosophies. They don’t do a lot of projects. They try to make sure that the projects they take on are really big. Batman Begins is a great example where you had a series of Batman movies. A lot of people agree that it’s by far the best Batman movie. They are really excited. They are going to put some serious resources behind it.

Interesting .... if done right this could be a record breaker in the box office.

I didn't read everything, but, I think it's got potential. As long it isn't as F'd up as DOOM was it should be fine.

The question is will it be live action, animated, CG, ect. (Sorry if that was mentioned in the post) There are alot of different variables good and bad with each style.

Hmm..I think that it might be alright, but I'm almost certain that it will sell millions of tickets worldwide. If you think about it, there are that many hardcore Warcraft fans out there. Even I'd see it and I'm not all that crazy about the series. Blizzard does have high standards and probably won't allow a poo film to be released anyway.

I honestly would've thought that this would've worked people up a bit more than it has. Is this old news or something?

I dont see a problem in this. More and more video games are shifting to the big screen. Usualy they blow chuncks, but i have a feeling eventualy they are going to get better over time.

Gawd, I couldn't even get through that D&D movie it was so bad. Tomb Raider sucked and so did Resident Evil. :( Didn't Silent Hill also get made into a movie?

Silent hill was a great videogame movie. It was much closer to the game than most game movies have been, and it rocked.

I am apprehensive about this, and quite rightly...

The CGI will have to be exactly spot on. Despite the ingame cutscenes from Warcraft being good, they aren't CGI quality yet.

And as Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within has proved, it can bankrupt a company.

I would stick to games - they do that best.*

The creators destroyed themselves making the movie?

Right. I cant imagine the film with creators not showing everything right when they cr8 a movie.Ive seen many game-based movies where things arent exactly like in a game . They really should do it with somone from blizzard who is familiar with the story. I dont think such film will replace Lotr but will take def the 2nd place as the best fantasy film or at least for me.

Square Pictures thought they did everything right. The movie just bombed. One cannot predict these things.

Blizzard has proved they can make good storylines and graphically-beautiful cutscenes. But that isn't enough to make a movie. You need sounds, believability (in a movie, not a game), realism and appeal, rather different from a game.*
