Voice com not working

Hi, wondering if someone can point me in the right direction.

I have bought a mic/headset to enable voice com whilst playing c/s. Mic works fine for windows(98se) voice recorder, but upon connecting to a server, last couple of console messages report:
"Unable to initialise directsoundcapture. Trying wavein.mmsystem004. The specified device is already in use. Wait untill it is free and then try again. Unable to initialise wave input. You will not be able to speak to other players using a microphone."
Obviously I have enabled voice in the c/s options.
I have also tried the voice_tweak.exe in the HL folder. Talking into the mic here registers a level perfectly also. However, when I then try system setup, it correctly identifies my hardware(Playback:AWE64 Direct Sound Driver[220], Recording:AWE64 Wave In [220](emulated)), then I hit test and it analyses my system, reporting back that I should contact my hardware vendor, as my system is incapable of playback. I then hit finish and get an illegal action type crash for voice_tweak.

If anyone has an idea of where I go/what to try next, I'd be gratefull.

Type v_dsound 1 in console to enable DirectSound first. If it's already set to 1, make sure no other programs are using your mic. You might need to restart the computer to get the bug to go away.
