I want to learn programming, and my uncle (who is really good with computers) told me i should get started with BASIC, I downloaded a compiler called: PureBasic, is this a good compiler?? and if not can you put up a link for Microsoft Basic 6.0 or something??) Anyway after I downloaded a compiler, I looked for "BASIC Tutorial" It poped up like "A very basic tutorail" and has nothing to do with what i want, so i went to 1 of the many that said "VB Tutorial" I understand that VB is a graphincs language, is this true, the point is that i can't find a "BASIC" tutorial. Could some one direct me to one ??

Give me an address and I'll mail a few of the old basic guides I've got. (But if I were you, I wouldn't bother with basic at all, it lacks the visual component entirely, and visual basic is by far a more complex language, but paradoxially easier to work with because of the visual component)

But...I find that the best way to learn a programming language is by looking at other people's programs just to get a feel of how the language works...I taught myself VB that way in a few months...

Basic is a waist of time, if you are going to learn a lang learn either c++, c#, java, or vb

c++ and c# both have free compilers I think java does as well.

vb is very easy to learn, but you need to pay for the compiler "Visual Studios", unless you are into illegal activites and use kazaa.

Wrong. MSBasic is a very good stepping stone. If you have never tried programming before I suggest starting out with Basic. Then once you get the basics or master it step on to bigger languages.

D-Mix)Dragon007 what do you want to do with the programs?

Let's use use some logic.

Little Billy is in first grade and wants to start doing algebra. So Billy was thrown into an algebra class and didn't know what to do. Billy didn't even know addition yet! So here is Billy trying to figure what the hell to do, Billy becomes frusturated. When instead of going from first grade to seventh, Billy could have just have gone step by step.

I still think AxL is wrong. BASIC is a waste of time. I knew NOTHING about computer languages, and Im learning VB right now. I can understand everything it is saying without the help of BASIC. VB is based off of BASIC, but is just more complex. It is for the most part a LOT different, but just as easy to understand.

I recommend getting "Visual Basic in 24 Hours". Thats the book Im reading. It comes with a program with a compiler inside.

If I were you I would pick up a vb for dummies book, a copy of vb and read the book. After that I would go to http://pscode.com/

Downlaod source codes and mess with them untill you understand what they do and how they work. That is the only way to learn it if you don't have someone teaching you.
