Various persistent zonfire problems

I've been fooling around with zonfire under 1.11 (never tried it under 1.10), and can't get even trivial operations to work.

Disclaimers:
* I'm not doing anything with closed b.net characters
* I have read the sticky
* I've tried v.80, v.82, and v.90, with identical results
* I do have double-byte support (english OS), but zonfire's setting suggestion on that point makes no sense to me (see below)

What's happening:
If I create a new SP character with the game, immediately save & exit, then open in zonfire, zonfire gives me "unknown item" errors and fails to open the character.
If I create a new SP character in-game, and remove all items from the inventory, belt, and stash, then it opens normally in zonfire. However, if I edit *any* stat, save, and reopen in-game, Diablo gives me a "cannot join game because of illegal stat" error.

Since people seem to be using this program, there's obviously something very different going on for me than most. If anyone can offer advice, I'd appreciate it.

Note: I'm on win2Kpro, English. My machine does have double-byte support, but zonfire's advice regarding "unicode settings" make no sense to me - regional settings allows you to set your IME, locale, codepages and so forth, but there is no "single vs. double-byte unicode" setting that I'm aware of, in win2K or any other windows that I've used. So if anyone knows what setting he's talking about, that might help too.

Thanks!

Incidentally, since I don't seem the only one who's been unable to get zonfire to work, does anyone know where one can d/l, for example, L99 saved-game files that have quests and waypoints but no stats/skills assigned? I only want to test builds for closed, so that would suit me just as well. I thought it'd be easy to find but came up blank, so I started looking for an editor.

Thanks...

You could create a char from the zonfire program itself. You shouldn't have a problem then.

Creating characters from zonfire works for me only if I save it immediately. If I alter any stat I get the "illegal stat" error on trying to load it. I even tried being internally consistent - i.e. adding one level, 5 stat points and 1 skill point and nothing else.

Perhaps it's to do with the unicode issue zonfire mentioned, but at any rate if it works reliably for others, that's why I wondered if someone could put files up for download.
