Units upgrade, others dont

Well, I was playing an older RP UMS map of starcraft, and I found that the person who made it mannaged to somehow mess with the code of starcraft or something... I say this because he made it so when you upgrade a unit, Only the units he selected would get the upgrade. As in, lets say I upgraded 20 armor, all units would show the 20 at the bottom of its armor picture, however it would not say 0+20 when you hold the mouse over. It he also did this with the weapon upgrades and the sheild upgrades. Im just wondering, what did he do to make them this way, and could I be shown the trigger/way of doing this?
