Ok, my brain is fried enough as it is and I've hit a mental block. I have an independent variable x which can be any real number, and a dependent variable y which is the larger value between x and 1-x.

Basically I'm making a function max(x,1-x)=y but I don't know how to set it up. I thought about making it piecewise, but that wouldn't help me at all. This is just a review question so it really shouldn't be too hard.

Any suggestions?

so are you saying y > x? or are you saying that y = whichever of x and 1-x is larger . . . . .. ???????

could you just post the qustion directly? or is this just a part of a quesiton

y=x or 1-x, depending on which is bigger.

Um, yeah I agree tbs. Anyway, I just figured it out, typing it really helped. I want to see what you guys would have said though. It helps to draw a number line.

ahhh, i see.

i dont do well with random fragmented math. when i do math i do it "in the zone", and i just whiz through everything without even thinking. otherwise i just say f it and sleep.

Calc AB, but this is like a precalc question. My answer is below:
Midpoint between x and 1-x = (x + 1 - x) / 2 = 1 / 2
Distance between x and 1-x = |x - (1 - x)| = |x - 1 + x| = |2x - 1|
Distance from midpoint of x and 1-x to either x or 1-x = |2x - 1| / 2
Midpoint + distance from point to midpoint = highest number between x and 1-x
max(x,1-x) = (1 / 2) + (|2x - 1| / 2) = ( 1+ |2x - 1|) / 2
