Oh hi Diablo II clone.
So I hear Torchlight was made by some of the guys that did Diablo I/II, and it shows too. The game is basically a carbon-copy with different graphics and a few tweaks here and there.
Torchlight centres around the mining town of Torchlight (what a terrible name for a town) where there's monsters and other baddies in the mines. The hero can choose one of three classes;
Vanquisher is a mix between the Assassin and Amazon classes from Diablo, using any ranged weapon from bows to rifles, to dual pistols. The Destroyer is your regular Barbarian type and the Alchemist is a mix between the Necromancer and the Sorceress.
I chose the Alchemist as a change of pace from what I normally choose (hack 'n slash melee types). The Alchemist is badass and his skill trees are equally as cool. Three skill trees per class, the Alchemist has "lore", "battle" and "arcane". Lore is all about summoning, Battle focuses on making you a battle-mage (And is surprisingly good at letting you do so) and Arcane is the damaging spells. The best thing about the skill trees is that they haven't flooded them with useless skills. Sure, there's the odd skill here and there that you don't want, but they're all useful and they basically allow you to become anyone you want to be. My only gripe was that the early spells you get kinda become useless once you hit higher tiers, especially in the arcane tree. Once I got ember flare that's basically all I use now, which is a shame.
Your hero can also choose a pet at the start of the game. Either a cat or a dog (cat looks fucked up. choose dog), both do the same thing, just different aesthetic. They're meatshields that can carry spell scrolls (which they'll use to cast shit), two rings, an amulet and quite a large backpack (as big as yours). Best thing about them, dump all your random shit in their bags and you can send them to town to sell it and they'll come back to you (takes about a minute and a half).
There are a lot more quests than Diablo II but they contain a lot less story. It's all very uninteresting and it's more fun to get into the fray and watch the bodies roll. From what I've seen so far (I'm level 20) there's about 4 different types of quests;
There's nothing really wrong with that set up, but the quests are given by the same people everytime. If you kill the shit in the portal, once you progress the story quest once the portal dude opens another one. If you kill the named mob for the song guy, he asks you to go deeper into the mine and kill another mob. It's all very boring, but then again, it's not really the driving force of the game.
The driving force is definitely loot and leveling. It's pretty much Diablo II that's prettier and doesn't have as much annoying shit in it. It's fresh, fun and very very cheap. You can buy it from Steam for $20USD, or just find a torrent and download it (500mb lawl).
Honestly, I recommend it. It's a good version of Diablo II, if you can handle the kiddie-like graphics (It's not all bloom and brown).
