The Goblin Tinkerer is mopst likely used best, as i have found with the ORC! One reason mainly. Pillage. Whn he gets his spell that does x3 dmg to buildings, ownage, here comes da money! (then again that may be late in game, but always good for those "last minute no money games")

heres a killer strat for you orc noobs:
first hero tinker, pocket factory. send in two peons (one to hack away at their trees and make towers in their wood area) and one to build towers on the outskirt of their bases (mainly as decoy for other peon). send in tinker every now and then to make a factory next to their gold mine which will decimate their economy.
all the while you tech to wyvs and bats. hey it worked for me the orc racist on random the other day
