Lets take a little look at Sony in today's news shall we.

A recent study by financial analysts at Merrill Lynch Japan suggests that the PlayStation 3 may cost up to $490 dollars to manufacture, with the company predicting that Sony will launch at $399 and take a $1.18bn loss in its first year on the market.
Xbox has followed a similar strategy, same wit the early PSP. It costs more to make then to sell. Xbox has only made a profit this year. This is all done for one reason: to put a consol in your home then make money off of accessories, internet (xbox live), and games. If

also:
d to use blu-ray disks. here is a little history lesson about sony. When the vcr were first being sold, much like DVDs ow there were several formats. Ever heard of the Betamax? Sony has also been pushing it's Blu-ray format for next gen DVD. PS3 is expecteVCR that only played Betamax. What happened? Do you own a betamax? Can you buy a betamax? That is what happened. It was sony who created it and marketed it. It was completely destroyed by the VHS everyone has.
further on formates Sony' mindisks have been a huge failure overall, and the PSP UMD format has been getting alot of negatve response, especialy from those that don't want to buy another Format of movies. WE have yet to see how this fairs, but Sony has had a BAD histroy with format wars.

PS3 and Metal Gear fans should note that MGS will return once again exclusvely for the PS3. HOWEVER The creater has gone on to say that MEtal gear will likely be made for other systems AND that he was disapointed with Sony on the PS3.

Lets turn to the PSP. The Nintnedo DS has sold 1 million units in Europe making 6 million wordwide. The PSP has yet to be launched in Europe. But get this, Sony is going out of it's way to keep the psp out of Europe. Sony has been trying to sue retailers selling imports. The "End to Nintendo's dominance in handhelds" sure has gotten off to a bad start. the PSP sales in the US were underexpectations, the PSP in europe has been delayed for 5 months, recently Nintendo has overtaken PSP sales in Japan along with poor PSP software sales and now Sony wants to block the sales of more units in Europe. Brilliant.

Let's review all the technical facts of the Betamax.

It had better picture.
It had better sound.
It had proprietary casettes.

VHS won because of the low cost, Betamax didn't take off because Sony licensed the custom casettes, and charged companies for creating movies for Betamax. Thus the companies opted to create a more cost effective, yet working video and audio replay device.

PS3 will have superior graphics than the Xbox 360, and I seriously hope they use it's potential to the max.

And how has this changed at all/? The DVD format war is between blu-ray (sony) and HD-DVD. Blu-ray is supposed to hold a larger amont of information but Hd-dvd is supposed to be much more cost effective. Same happened 2 decades earlier, that is going on now.

Either way, it looks as Nintendo is going to be the only cost effective system coming up. Microsoft and Sony are set to lose money with their begining prices vs. manufacture cost, more power doesn't really matter if companies opt to go the cheaper route for developing.

I'm buying a PS3 purely for the BlueRay support. No Blueray DVD player is going to be under 500$. And I can use the PS3 for more than just dvds, if I want.

Edit: A lot of techsavey people are doing this also. Sony is marketing it like this on purpose also. They're pretty smart if you didn't notice.

So what, they're marketing the PS3 as an entertainment center all in one? Funny, last time I checked I bought VIDEO GAME SYSTEMS to play VIDEO GAMES...basically. I'm with Nintendo in the fact that...game systems should do just that, play games and nothing else.

No, they're marketing it as a game system, but they just throw in every interview and other thing that "It will suppose BlueRay technology"

Most people don't understand that a lowgrade BlueRay DVD player is going to run at like 400 or 500 when they start comming out heavily. PS3 will do the same for 399.

The PS3 IS an entertainment machine, the president of SCEI said it himself.

PS3 should be worth the 399 because of the Blu-ray drive alone.

It's an entertainment machine. That is what I hate about Sony. I don't need all the other extra crap, I want good quality games. Sony could be going in the shitter with thier quality, another reason why you never buy the Frst of sony product. I don't know if any single PS2 still work from the first few shipments.
