At humanity's current level of technological advancement, if something bad happened, the human race would die and there would be relatively little we could do about it. For example, say our sun goes supernova, we wouldn't be able to truly do anything that would make a difference. Only a select few individuals would be able to board spaceships before the explosion hit Earth, and those few would most likely not be able to escape our solar system in time (save for the new experimental interstellar spaceflight engines that are currently being built).

There has always been a threat of a catastrophic event that ends humanity, fortunately the chances are so low that we've made it this far. The chances of the sun going Supernova at this point in it's life is VERY small. I think the sun expands first and may not supernova at all. We'll die nonetheless but I dont think that'll happen for a while.

Doesn't matter anyways. Nothing you can do about it.

First off, the sun will not just go supernova. The sun will progress to a red star long before it goes supernova. That'll take billions of years, so we have some time. REgardless when it does become a red star we're fucked anyways. The big fear ISN'T a supernova, it's when the sun loses enough mass and ends up expanding to well beyond earth's orbit.

There isn't really much reason to say humanity is special and should survive, as all life will be extinguished the minute the sun becomes a red star.

We've got closer problems than that. What about the planet heating up? Some models show that in just under 100 years the mean average temperature could rise by 4 degrees (centigrade) and that's enough to fuck up most of the earth's population.

we'll kill ourselves long before our sun does. We will drain the earth of clean drinking water. I'd bank on a meteorite putting us on the brink of extension long before the sun does. however if we don't blow ourselves up there's no doubt in my mind in a billion years we'll have the technology to inhabit other planets and at that point I doubt our line will ever end. Honestly I hope 2012 really is the end.

Duuudes, I highly recommend watching Meteor Path to Destruction (2009) if you haven't done so. It's the most awesome movie of that type so far. Did you know? It's sad that we haven't had a catastrophy so far, nature should get rid of the evil humanity. Err I see more than 1 person (I mean not only in bf) is saying 2012. Nope, but let's see what will happen in 2028 when a meteorite is supposed to cross the earth's orbit and is said to do that at that point of the orbit where the Earth will be i.e will collide with it. But in that movie, I will reveal only that - they are also saying 2027. Just watched it last night and it was gr8.

Got any more cool movies with catastrophies? I Love them. It's even sad that the experiment in Switzerland that was supposed to collide particles won't bring any 'interesting' effects. Anyway, if you've ever paid attention to my name, watch that movie and you will see what Impactor means.

If this did happen there would be nothing we could do about it. Hopefully technology catches up enough so that we can colonize other planets and function independently without earth.

Are you saying i made it up or the models are just inaccurate?
The earth shows that over time in the past the Earth heats up and cools down. It's done that from the begging the time. "Global Warming" isn't heating the planet up any faster than it has already been in the past. Don't get me wrong there's plenty of reasons to go green. But I don't believe in Global warming. Some places may be hitting record highs most of Canada for example hit record lows for almost 3 weeks straight shit was ridiculous.

Whoa hold up a second. When did i say i believe in global warming? I just mentioned that some models hold a dismal future for us.

Has the process of heating and cooling ever reached a climax when the earth's population is this high? No. Temperature changes can shift where crops can be grown less crops means shortages, famine. Just because we may not have caused it doesn't mean we aren't going to pay for it.

humans will evolve and we will no longer need air and we can just float in space for ever

Global warming is the warming of our planet/atmosphere. To not believe in it is completely ignorant and unfounded. The reasons for it, however, are definitely debatable. The fact that it's happened in different periods of time doesn't make it not exist -- it just proves that it happens, and may not be a permanent or incredibly drastic thing.

Agreed with Roach. Wtf guys? Compare 10 years ago and now, not that 2 years ago the summer may have been hotter than last year to say 'oh we had hotter weather than this year'. The melting of ice caps, the famines, the floods? Who causes that? Aliens?

The global warming thing screwed with my mind once. It was summer of 2006, in St.Petersburg, Russia, 3 days after I watched "Day After Tomorrow". So I am walking along the street near St.Isaac's Cathedral with my friends, its a hot summer day, not a cloud in the sky, suddenly we get 10 minutes of intense hail out of nowhere. That was kinda tripy.
