[glow=red]Alright, every human can learn to do anything, but why are some people natural? Is it genes or something else? Discuss.[/glow]

Talent is innate and natural per definition so it lies in the genes 100%. Case closed.

[glow=red]CAse reopened. But how can the genes affect how you draw or how you play sports? Everyone can be trained to do both of those but some people are good from the beggining, it can't be just genes.[/glow]

Am I now expected to explain you how genes work and then why they exist and go all into philosophy of existance? I hope not. It's just like that.

Well like Chris Rock said. Alot of Black people are good in sports because white slave owners used to breed them. Kill off the smart ones and keep the big and strong ones.

With the genes you can be good at drawing and then you have a kid and if he begins to draw he will gradually get better at it.

Natural Skill's definatly come from genetics, I mean look at the MAnning's in the NFL.

There whole family is made of good QB's.

I think a lot of it is just genes; the way you're built, the parts of your brain you use the most, stuff like that. Of course, hard work can help someone who's already talented to improve, and I think if anyone works hard enough they can become really good at something. I'm guessing it can go either way.

I'm exceptionally good at first person shooter games. Does that mean there's a specific gene responsible? I think not.

Though trite, there's some truth in the age old saying "practice makes perfect".

People DEVELOP their skills over time.

Nobody's born with the ability to draw (yea...I bet Botticelli could paint when he was 5), and by the same token, nobody's born with any real tangible skills. Essentially, we're just pieces of clay molded by our experiences over time.

However, I won't discount the fact that say...being muscular might affect one's performance in say...boxing...or that being tall may affect one's performance in say...basketball. In many situations, one's genes may indeed affect one's ability to perform a specific task. However, the ABILITY to box, isn't innate, and neither is the ability to dunk a basketball. If such 'skills' were innate, then people wouldn't need to train.

We could go on in circles forever discussing this nature vs. nurture stuff.

You kind of missed the point of talents with genes. There's not genes for talents, it's just that you call it talent if e.g. you can move your hand very precisely and have low reaction times. And the basis for those things lies in your genes, of course you can improve, but someone untalented maybe will never get to the level that another one started at. That difference is what we call talent and it lies in the genes, obviously. There's not like a piece of paper that reads "Musical talent". It's rather a good ability to control your fingers/breath or whatever according to what you think.

Sorry, but dexterity is the basis for a decent musician or drawer. And I hope by talent you are not talking about something such as the innate ability to play a certain instrument perfect from day 1. Talent means that you have a better basis, it's not a set thing coming to you as a gift.

Now you might say, OK but the defintion says "A marked innate ability, as for artistic accomplishment.". But I don't think anyone takes this as what it says exactly. When you're talking about one's talent you don't usually mean that he has been an awesome artist from the first day he got an instrument because that's not possible. Some people just have it a lot easier. And talent comes in natural physical an psychic skills or attributes such as dexterity, strength, height and is then transfered over to something sucha as a sport or an instrument. A newborn's brain doesn't have information about the size and weight of a basketball or about the notes on a guitar. This is kind of obvious but I thought it still needs to be pointed out. Talent is not an innate ability that others need years for to achieve. It's just a major headstart and as such is coming in genes.

I see where you're going Korittke, but "low reaction times" (as you put it), don't make me "talented" at first person shooters.

...and are we re-defining words now?

I must admit, it's a really good question. I mean how come some people can just pass all their exams without even studying, whilst others can study for hours on end and only just scrape through with a pass. I don't understand sometimes, I guess some people are just naturally gifted. How could it be genes though, thats what I don't understand. I mean is there a smart gene that you can inherit from your parents? My dad's good at maths, but I stink at it, so whats the go?

I think both genes and practice have effects. Which makes
me wonder, do genes determine if you are left-handed or right-handed?

anyways, my friend is left-handed to begin with. But since he is catholic
i think they believe if you are left-handed that is a sign of the satan or
seomthing, so yeah his parents forced him to write with his right hand.
So now 20 years later, he is right-handed for writing but left-handed for
everything else... I dont know if that is relivant to the topic tho...

Well left handed I think is a bit of defection in gene... since both my parents are right handed (and grandparents) but I'm left handed. Well you can be a quick learner meaning you can learn stuff easily but you suck at improving it. I guess it can be something with genes...

Personally, I think it's more of the practice. If you're family is a bunch of good quarterbacks, you're going to strive to be better than them at it (not to mention you're going to grow up doing pretty much nothing but that). It's just another form of the human psyche trying to become better than one another at something.
