After countless hours of searching, I finally found my Starcraft installation CD. Well... a copy of my Starcraft installation CD, at least. I installed Starcraft, installed Brood Wars, and then ran the game. Unfortunately, it wouldn't even start. It would appear to start, but then nothing would happen.

I then downloaded the patch online from Blizzard's website. I installed it and then ran the game. Much to my delight, it ran fine. I watched the introductory videos just for the heck of it. Ah, what great graphics! Immediately, I clicked Multiplayer and connected to bnet. I disconnected (I didn't really feel like playing at the time) and went about my business.

My little sister was trying to connect later that day. She yells at me, "Ryan, Starcraft's not connecting! What'd you do?" so I climbed up from my comfortable half-slumber on the couch and went to the computer to fix the problem. Now, as soon as it begins connecting and reaches the "Accessing Account" stage (the last one, I believe), the game crashes to the desktop. It now does that every time I connect and I can't seem to fix it. I was thinking it was a firewall problem or something, but that didn't make much sense... I don't have any firewalls enabled on my computer and the built-in Windows XP firewall is disabled (I actually disabled the service using the services.msc utility).

Any ideas as to how I can fix this? I really wanna play Starcraft...

try again and see if it's resolved yet.. if not, try signing onto a different server or something.. try restarting your computer if you haven't.. lol if worse comes to worse just re-install it :p

There's only four servers. It crashes with all of them.

I reinstalled it, but it wasn't a clean reinstall. The problem persists. I've tried playing in regular SC and not BW, too. No change.

try this..

Reset the Battle.net server list:
This step is not for Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos or The Frozen Throne users.
Click on Start then Run.
Type regedit and click OK.
Click on the + icon beside the HKey_Local_Machine branch.
Click on the + icon beside the Software branch.
Select the Battle.net branch and press the delete key.
Click on the + icon beside the HKey_Current_User branch.
Click on the + icon beside the Software branch.
Select the Battle.net branch and press the delete key.
Now start the game and connect to Battle.net.

I've been looking for that registry tweak... I read about someone who had the same problem as me and fixed it using this tweak.

The tweak didn't work. I scanned for spyware before I ran it, but I don't have any viruses.

Cort: what program?

I FIXED IT!!! :D

All I did was install the new Windows XP x64 update. I probably should have mentioned the fact that I don't use regular Windows XP...

So.... anyone wanna play?

This update only came out a couple weeks ago. It was tricky though... before this update, Windows Update didn't even work on this OS. I had no real way of knowing that the update was released.
