Have you noticed that the ammount of wars have been significantly reduced durring the last 200 years? Violent and sometimes deadly duels have been reduced if not disappeared durring the last 200 years. Why do you think that the ammount of wars have reduced since the last lets say 50 years?

I think its because of sports. Sports have become a large industry in major parts of the world. Ranging from football(american) to baseball to wresteling(fakeand otherwise) to golf to swimming, there are many sports in the world today that wernt 50-100 years ago. Sports settles the body and soul and possibly quenches the thirst for violence by a person...maybe not in swimming or golf...even though it could b ein golf, but in sports like boxing, football, soccer, or hockey has violence given in to thirst quenchhing fun. Adreniline races as the two sides compete for a prize while you watch(or play) enjoying the entertainment. Sports is like the colleseum of roman times, it entertains the masses and keeps them happy. And anyone can enjoy sports, so its widely viewed and accepted.

so how do you feel about sports?

Did anything i say make any sense? its been hard summing it up, if you dont understand ill try and explain a bit better.

Interesting take on the matter; I never quite thought of it that way (so yes, your argument does make sense). I guess there is some validity in the treatise that sports "entertains the masses and keeps them happy", but i think there's more to it than that. Sports may in our day and time act as an alternative to wars through allowing nations to compete non-violently...so like you said..sports today are analogous to the Colleseum the Romans ran. This is consistent with the notion that wars today are driven by politics and economics as opposed to power-hungry rulers. In light of the theory that war and sports exist dualistically, modern day trophies and titles can be viewed as a modern version of 'the spoils of war'. I totally agree with you.

I agree with your point but, there have been many sports in the UK and otherwise well before all this televised american stuff, Rugby, Football(soccer), Cricket, So if your talking about bloodlust Rugby is the place i would go for it before american football. and this sport has been around for a long time, and it never stopped any conflicts, i think your point should be Sports are being telivised more, and yes what you said does make sense
oh and err
power-hungry rulers
They are still out there

How do you justify your claim? The decreasing frequency at which wars occur can be thought of as correlated with the increasing imporatance of sports in the international community. I do not claim that sports 'cause' people to be less violent, just that there is enough evidence to consider the theory...

They are still out there
Course they're out there...its just that almighty kings and emporers dont exist in our day and age, so political motives are more important nowadays...

My only thought is, soccer (The real kind, not american) some of those matches the crowds get a little crazy, though rare, lives are lost, and every life should be taken into consideration.

I've never thought about sports that way, but it's a good point. I think the idea of sports as a "distraction" makes sense, since it provides a safer way of taking out your anger than war does. It would probably be really interesting to do some sort of study on whether or not sports actually do make people less violent :)

I would say video games help more. You get to kill people, but with no consequences. ;)

yet, european nations have fought over several thousand major conflicts. Europe is a very...i guess you could say violent continent. But would you perfer obnoxious(and sometimes dangerous) fans or would you perfer war to settle diffrences?

Interesting..It sounds like it could be true because sports (esp football) let out a lot of agression. But, I think it would have more of an effect on the violence and hatred in our society and there's still a significant amount of that around these days.
