Sound effect question

Hey, I know virtually shit about computer stuff, so I'm wondering if anyone knows if there's a way to turn off that annoying little "ding" when a notification or error message pops up. It's a pain in the ass when I'm closing like 60 pop-up email windows and keep getting that DING when it asks me if I'm sure...it's interupting the flow of my Metallica goddammit.

Yeah, anybody know?

Start > Settings > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices > Sounds > Asterisk/Critical Stop/Default Beep/Exclamation - remove them.*
